The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 9509 on 8/24/09, as the stock market traded higher in the morning but sold off in the afternoon. The Dow Jones Futures opened pre market higher due to strength in the Asian Markets. The Dow Jones was up over 80 points during the morning trading session but pulled back during the afternoon due to weakness in the financials. Stocks such as Citigroup ( C ) and Bank of America ( BAC ) made highs right after the open but then led the stock market lower late in the day. The stock market volume continues to be very low and will be low for the next few weeks. Today's late day sell off could just be the start of a move back to the 10 day moving average but I am not concerned. Wall St will receive some major economic data tomorrow - Check out some of the events I will be watching for Tuesday. If you are trading, take a look at my Stocks to Watch Report for tomorrow.

First Solar FSLR - High of Day Alert

First Solar, Inc. (FSLR) stock just broke through the high of the day this morning at $123.70. I bought the stock and will be using a stop loss order at $119.50. I will add to my long position when the stock closes above the 10 day moving average ( currently $135.22 and falling rapidly ).

I don't usually buy stocks when they are trading below all three major moving averages ( 10, 50, 200 day ) but am making an exception given the huge down move.

Advanced Micro Devices AMD Stock Upgrade - 8/24/09

August 24, 2009 - Shares of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) are set to open high this morning following a key upgrade out of Citigroup.

Price Target - $5.50

Citigroup upgrades AMD stock to BUY from Hold. Citigroup upgrades Advanced Micro citing valuation and expectations for the company's competitive position and gross margins to improve.

The next major resistance level I see on the charts is the July 2009 high of $4.25.

Capital One COF Stock Upgraded August 24 - 2009

8/24/09 - Shares of Capital One Financial Corp. (COF) are set to open slightly higher in pre market trading this morning as Barclays has issued a key upgrade.

Price Target - $50

Barclays is upgrading Capital One citing long-term earnings growth as the company benefits from declining charge-offs and credit costs.

The next major resistance level I see on the charts for COF is the early November high of $41.29.

Cell Therapeutics CTIC FDA Application Approval

August 24, 2009 - Shares of Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (CTIC) are set to open up premarket at $1.80 in about an hour as the FDA has approved the application for pixantrone for standard review. Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (CTIC) FDA Application News

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (CTI) (Nasdaq and MTA: CTIC) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted and has filed for review the Company's New Drug Application (NDA) for pixantrone as treatment for relapsed or refractory aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). A Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) date will be established by the FDA regarding the review of the pixantrone NDA by September 4th 2009.

"The FDA's acceptance to file our pixantrone NDA represents a significant milestone for CTI and for patients with relapsed and refractory aggressive NHL. We look forward to working with the FDA and their final decision on our request for priority review," noted James Bianco, M.D., Chief Executive Officer of CTI.

About Pixantrone

Pixantrone (BBR 2778), is a novel topoisomerase II inhibitor with an aza-anthracenedione molecular structure that differentiates it from currently marketed anthracyclines and other related chemotherapy agents. Anthracyclines are the cornerstone therapeutic for the treatment of lymphoma, leukemia, and breast cancer. Although anthracyclines are sufficiently effective to be used as first-line (initial) treatment, anthracyclines cause cumulative heart damage that may result in congestive heart failure many years later. As a result, there is a lifetime limit of anthracycline doses and most patients who previously have been treated with an anthracycline are not able to receive further anthracycline treatment if the patient's disease returns. Pixantrone also can be administered through a peripheral vein rather than a central implanted catheter as required for other drugs in this class. The FDA is required to set an action date for review of an application 74 days after the initial submission of the NDA. CTI expects to receive the action date for this drug candidate from the FDA and a final decision on review status on September 4th, 2009. Full Article

Stocks to Watch - 8/24/09 - Stock Market Ideas

Citigroup Inc (C:NYSE) - Citigroup was on fire Friday after breaking up through $4.48 and closing over the 200 day moving average on Thursday. Resistance is located at the high on Friday of $4.86 and $5.00. I will be buying any pullbacks to $4.48 and the 200 day moving average. Check out my Citigroup Technical Analysis

American Intl Group, Inc. (AIG) - AIG failed at the $35 resistance level again Friday. I will be buying pullbacks below $30 with at $29.99. AIG stock should see a pop when $35 is finally broken to the upside.

SIRIUS XM Radio Inc. (SIRI) - Waiting for SIRI stock to close above $0.75. I would like to buy any pullbacks into the low $0.60's. Check out my SIRI Techincal Analysis.

Freddie Mac (FRE) - Continues to surge higher but failed to close above $1.89 resistance. Love pullbacks to $1.50 for a buy

Fannie Mae (FNM) - Resistance $1.32 & $1.43 - Love pullbacks to $1. Friday was the highest close of 2009 so far....very bullish

Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ)
Daily Finan. Bull 3X Shs(ETF)(FAS) - FAS is surging once again with the overall stock market. Resistance continues to be located at $79.36 while support is Friday's low of $74.26. I will only be buying FAZ if FAS breaks down below $70.

Bank of America Corp ( BAC ) - Bank of America Corporation is now trading solidly in the $17's. Watching for a close above $17.93 - Check out my BAC Technical Analysis.

Ambac Financial Group, Inc. (ABK) - Another stock worth watching is ABK. Resistance is located at $1.22 as well as $1.64. ABK closed over all three major moving averages on Friday and has support at $1.10 & $1.00.

Las Vegas Sands Corp. (LVS) - LVS stock continues it's journey toward the November 2008 high of $16.81. All pullbacks to the 10 day moving average have been bought heavily and offer a nice support level.

Hemispherx Biopharma, Inc. (HEB) - For a trade, I will be buying HEB when it breaks up through $1.96 and adding more when it breaks above $2. This should provide a solid gain in my opinion.

Citigroup Inc (C:NYSE) stock broke closed over an important resistance level of $4.48 on Friday. The stock has also closed two straight days over the 200 day moving average which is extremely bullish! I plan to buy any pullbacks to $4.48 and the 200 day moving average. On the upside, the high from Friday of $4.86 becomes a resistance level as does $5. As soon as $5 is closed over, big funds are allowed to get back into the stock which could provide another spike.

Rentech, Inc. (RTK) stock has been on fire lately due to more Jet Fuel news. I like pullbacks under $2 as a buy with a stop at $1.81. I will also be buying when RTK breaks Friday's high of $2.33 as well as Thursday's high of $2.56. RTK is the ultimate momentum stock right now so keep it on your watch lists. Any additional positive news will send RTK shares soaring again.

Resistance Levels: $0.75, $1.00

Sirius XM Radio stock broke out above the April 2009 high of $0.63 last week, and you see the end result. Siri even broke above the $0.75 resistance level but failed to close above it. I would now be a buyer of pullbacks to $0.63 and the 10 day moving average. If Siri can close above $0.75, it has a good chance of retesting $1.00 days or weeks later. If SIRI does end up breaking above $1, you could see an additional flood of buyers enter the stock. I continue to be bullish of SIRI

The FDA will rule on August 24, 2009 - whether or not to Fast Track ( priority review ) pixantrone for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. If the FDA accepts the application, there will be an FDA decision on Dec 24, 2009. If the FDA does not fast track, then I would think a normal application process would go through and we could see a decision in early 2010. As for CTIC stock, I would be a buyer of pullbacks into the $1.30's and breakouts above $1.85, $2, and $2.23 resistances. After $2.23, the next major resistance is located at $2.50.
