Dow Jones Analysis 1/13/09 - Stock Market

The following is Technical Analysis for the Dow Jones ( DJIA ) for 1/13/09

Dow Jones Support & Resistance Levels - January 13, 2009

Resistance Levels: 8500, 8750 ,9000, 9088, 9150
Support Levels: 8350, 8150

Today's Biggest Gainers - Top 2009 Stock Gainers

The Dow Jones has hit a key support level of 8500 and closed below this today. This is a very bearish signal and something worth watching. I have said all along that I am bullish only above 8500. The next support level for the Dow is around 8350 and if that is broken, you could test the Major support level of 8150 that has held multiple times in the past four months. 8500 will now be a minor resistance level in which buyers who got caught there will sell the break even. Lets hope we get back above 8500 tomorrow. Alcoa earnings tonight appear to have taken us back over 8500 for tomorrow. This could all change fast so stay tuned... For More Technical Analysis, Go Here

The following is Technical Analysis for the Nasdaq ( NAS ) for 1/13/08

Resistance Levels: 1551, 1600, 1665

Support Levels: 1500

Today's Biggest Gainers - Top 2009 Stock Gainers

The Nasdaq continues its slide as we now have closed below the 50 day moving average at 1551. While this would usually give the Nasdaq support, the Dow Jones is now trading well below its 50 day moving average. The next support level I will be watching is the major support level of 1500. I'd expect the Nasdaq to get a bounce at 1500, or a close back over the 50 day moving average.
Another major area of resistance will be the 1600 level once again. I am bullish on the Nasdaq over 1500. For More Technical Analysis, Go Here

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 8474 on 1/12/09, as the stock market went down on fears that Alcoa's ( AA ) earnings will disappoint tonight. AA is expected to report a loss of 4 cents per share. Also, a huge warning sign today was the trading action in Citigroup ( C ) stock. Citi shares broke two key support levels and began another rapid decline during the afternoon hours. Citigroup broke $6.51 in the morning, and then $5.94 during the afternoon. These were two key lows in December. Citigroup traded below $5.45 in the final hour of trading today down almost 20% on the day. The Dow Jones and Nasdaq followed the S&P 500 lower and now the Dow Jones is below 8500, a key support level. Tomorrow will be an interesting day for the stock market! Stock Market Report 1/12/09, January 12, 2009

Why is the stock market going down today? The Dow Jones, Nasdaq, and S&P 500 are all very weak during the first half of trading today. Here are a few reasons why the major averages continue their downward slide.

- Earnings Season is Here - Alcoa AA, a key Dow Jones component, releases earnings tonight and Wall Street is sending shares of this company down almost 8% ahead of this report. This alone is adding pressure to the Dow Jones Average.

- Oil Prices Continue to Fall - After hitting $50 last week, Oil is back under $38 today and this is sending commodities stocks lower. Look at Potash ( POT ) for example, down 10.3% today on no news.

- Citigroup ( C ) Breaking Down - Citigroup continues to break down breaking the $6.51 low from late December. Support is at $5.94 from early December and if this level is take out, look out below. If Citigroup starts free falling like it did back in November, the market could get spooked once again. Keep an eye on Citi!

- Low Volume - There is just no volume in the market today, a few big sells can really hit the markets hard when you have a lack of volume and buyers.

- Dow Jones Testing 8500 - It was bound to happen sooner or later, the Dow Jones is back testing 8500, today and tomorrow could be big technical days.

Alcoa AA Earnings 1/12/09 - January 12, 2009

Tonight, 1/12/09, Alcoa AA kicks off earnings season for 2009. Analysts predict that Alcoa ( AA ) will report their first loss in nearly six years.

Alcoa is the world's #3 producer of Aluminum and their expected loss is due to the fact that Aluminum prices were slashed in half since the summer of 2008.

Today, AA stock is trading at $10.11, down 6.5% - Analysts expect Alcoa to report 5.4 billion in revenue with a loss per share of .04 cents. Since this stock has been crushed over the past six months, any surprise to the upside could really make this stock pop higher.

I will post the numbers tonight when they come out - right here

Alcoa Revenue - 5.70 Billion
Alcoa EPS - (-.28 )EPS without charges
Stock Price After Earnings - Halted
