The Dow was up 250 during the Obama News Conference but gave back half of those gains after he spoke. I felt he gave a great news conference! Libor Rates fell once again today and investors also shook off the General Motors ( GM ) news. Not sure of any news as of yet.

GM Halted - Earnings Pending 11/07/08

The New York Stock Exchange ( NYSE ) just halted General Motors ( GM ) pending their earnings release due out any moment. I will edit this post with an update when earnings come out. The number you will want to watch is their cash burn rate. Here are Ford's earnings this morning.

GM Earnings ( $7.35 ) vs ( $3.70 ).....huge loss!

General Motors burned through 6.91 Billion in cash during the quarter, they are burning through 2.3 billion dollars per month, Yikes!

"Even if GM implements the planned operating actions that are substantially within its control, GM's estimated liquidity during the remainder of 2008 will approach the minimum amount necessary to operate its business. Looking into the first two quarters of 2009, even with its planned actions, the company's estimated liquidity will fall significantly short of that amount unless economic and automotive industry conditions significantly improve, it receives substantial proceeds from asset sales, takes more aggressive working capital initiatives, gains access to capital markets and other private sources of funding, receives government funding under one or more current or future programs, or some combination of the foregoing. The success of GM's plans necessarily depends on other factors, including global economic conditions and the level of automotive sales, particularly in the United States and Western Europe. "

They have 120 days during which something needs to happen or they could go bankrupt.

GM stock is trading at $4.10 per share

Art Cashin CNBC 11/07/08 - Retest Lows - Jobs Number

Art Cashin was on CNBC today, 11/07/08, here are Art Cashin's comments on the stock market.

I'm a little surprised, I thought we'd be weak this morning because of the revision, and its equal to this jobs number being over 300,000 lost. Barack Obama is going to speak this afternoon at 2pm, I wish he would have waited until after the close today but we'll be watching.

Art, what is the likely hood we retest the lows?

I think there is a 50% chance we go down and retest the lows in some fashion, watch the S&P 500, if we break through 900 and 880 the percentage goes up.

If we test and fail to hold the lows we will have a very short, very sharp plunge and then build a monster reversal rally that will last. You can commit some funds on the way down to prepare for a reversal that will follow.
