FDA Allows Aastrom Biosciences to resume Heart Study

FDA Removes Clinical Hold From Aastrom Phase II IMPACT-DCM Clinical Trial

Patient Death Unrelated to Aastrom's CRCs; Trial to Resume At All Clinical Sites for Patients Suffering From Dilated Cardiomyopathy

June 18, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Aastrom Biosciences, Inc. (Nasdaq:ASTM), a leading developer of autologous adult stem cell treatments for severe chronic cardiovascular diseases, today reported that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has removed the clinical hold from the Company's U.S. Phase II IMPACT-DCM clinical trial and that patient enrollment would resume at all five initiated clinical sites. The IMPACT-DCM trial is evaluating the use of Cardiac Repair Cells (CRCs), a mixture of stem and progenitor cells derived from a patient's own bone marrow, for the treatment of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a severe form of chronic heart failure.

On June 17, 2009, the FDA informed Aastrom that it had completed its investigation into the death of a patient following treatment with the Company's CRCs and that the clinical hold had been lifted; therefore, the IMPACT-DCM clinical trial could resume. Based on autopsy results and medical records, the FDA, the clinical site's principal investigator and an independent Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) have attributed the patient death to progression of the disease and determined it was unrelated to the CRC treatment.

"Patient safety is top priority for Aastrom. We are saddened by the loss of one of our patients. At the same time, we are grateful that this investigation was conducted in an efficient manner and that the FDA was able to provide prompt review and remove the clinical hold so quickly. This comprehensive review, along with the FDA's permission to carry on the trial without modifications, underscores the safety of the trial design and that our CRC product played no role in the patient's death," stated George W. Dunbar, President and Chief Executive Officer at Aastrom. "We do not expect that this short delay will interfere with our goal of completing patient enrollment in this trial by the end of calendar year 2009. We are eager to resume patient enrollment and treatment in the IMPACT-DCM trial and to continue evaluating the clinical data we gather from these patients." Full Article

Stock Market 3/8/09 Dow Jones Report

After a horrible week comes to an end, Wall Street must now look ahead for any signs of a stock market bottom or recovery. The Dow Jones started last week at 7062.93 and ended yesterday on a positive note at 6626.94. When it looked like the bottom was going to fall out on the stock market yesterday, we had a nice short squeeze going into the close. This was the first time in 7 trading sessions where we went up into the close versus selling off. Stock market futures were even up in after hours trading as well. Below are some things that I will be watching for next week.

Stock Market Watch List 3/9/09 - 3/14/09

General Motors ( GM ) - Do you hear the clock ticking? General Motors is currently in meetings with bond holders in an effort to reduce their debt by 2/3's before the March 31, 2009 deadline. GM stock fell to a 75 year low yesterday as it closed at $1.45 per share. On Monday, officials from the Obama auto task force will sit down with GM executives in hopes to avoid bankruptcy. General Motors will give the task force members an up close view of the Chevy Volt Hybrid. Besides the stock market crashing in 2009, this could be the number one story soon as Washington comes to a decision. A GM bankruptcy could have huge systemic risk and send the stock market spiralling down once again.

Stem Cell Funding - President Barack Obama is getting set to overturn the ban on Stem Cell research funding by George W Bush. At least $200 million dedicated to stem cell research is part of a fast-tracked federal stimulus grant fund that could deliver money to labs as early as summer's end, said Dr. Arnold Kriegstein, director of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UC San Francisco.

Stem Cell Stocks such as Stem Cells ( STEM ), Geron ( GERN ) Aastrom ( ASTM ), and Pluristem Therapeutics ( PSTI ) could be very active on Monday when this news hits.

DryShips ( DRYS ) - DRYS was very strong at the end of last week. After a capitulation move under $3, DRYS ripped back over the 10 day moving average. A break over $4 could start a nice run back to the upside. Keep in mind, DRYS is due to report earnings any day now. This event could make or break DRYS stock price.

Freeport McMoran ( FCX ) - Did anyone notice how strong this stock was yesterday? FCX was up most of the day as the stock market went down. Copper prices have been rising after a nice stabilization period. After hitting a low of 26.32 on Monday, FCX hit a high of $34.39 on Friday!

Geron GERN Stem Cell Stocks 1/23/09

Geron ( GERN ) is out with Stem Cell news this morning, January 23, 2009 - as this company will be the first company testing a human in the world's first human clinical trial involving Stem Cells. Under the new Obama administration, the FDA has approved this trial in which the Bush administration wasn't allowing Government funding for Stem Cell Research.

GERN stock is exploding higher today, to $6.48 Up 24%. Other Stem Cell stocks are higher such as Stem Cells ( STEM ) and Aastrom Biosciences ( ASTM )

Geron Corporation (Nasdaq: GERN) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted clearance of the company's Investigational New Drug (IND) application for the clinical trial of GRNOPC1 in patients with acute spinal cord injury.
The clearance enables Geron to move forward with the world's first study of a human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-based therapy in man. Geron plans to initiate a Phase I multi-center trial that is designed to establish the safety of GRNOPC1 in patients with "complete" American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) grade A subacute thoracic spinal cord injuries.

"The FDA's clearance of our GRNOPC1 IND is one of Geron's most significant accomplishments to date," said Thomas Okarma, Ph.D., M.D., Geron's president and CEO. "This marks the beginning of what is potentially a new chapter in medical therapeutics - one that reaches beyond pills to a new level of healing: the restoration of organ and tissue function achieved by the injection of healthy replacement cells. The ultimate goal for the use of GRNOPC1 is to achieve restoration of spinal cord function by the injection of hESC-derived oligodendrocyte progenitor cells directly into the lesion site of the patient's injured spinal cord."

GRNOPC1, Geron's lead hESC-based therapeutic candidate, contains hESC-derived oligodendrocyte progenitor cells that have demonstrated remyelinating and nerve growth stimulating properties leading to restoration of function in animal models of acute spinal cord injury (Journal of Neuroscience, Vol. 25, 2005).

"The neurosurgical community is very excited by this new approach to treating devastating spinal cord injury," said Richard Fessler, M.D., Ph.D., professor of neurological surgery at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. "Demyelination is central to the pathology of the injury, and its reversal by means of injecting oligodendrocyte progenitor cells would be revolutionary for the field. If safe and effective, the therapy would provide a viable treatment option for thousands of patients who suffer severe spinal cord injuries each year."

Stem Cells STEM FDA Approval 12/18/08

Expect Stem Cells ( STEM ) to be a big gainer today, 12/18/08, as this company received FDA Approval to initiate a clinical trial of the Company’s proprietary HuCNS-SC product candidate (purified human neural stem cells) to treat Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease (PMD), a fatal brain disorder that mainly affects young children. This Phase I trial is designed to evaluate the safety and preliminary efficacy of HuCNS-SC cells as a treatment for PMD. Currently, there are no approved treatments for this disease.

This is the Company’s second FDA-approved clinical trial to evaluate HuCNS-SC cells as a potential treatment for neurodegenerative diseases. The first such study was the Company’s Phase I clinical trial of HuCNS-SC cells to treat neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL), or Batten disease. The Phase I NCL trial will be completed in January 2009.

Patients with PMD are born with a gene mutation that results in insufficient myelination of nerve fibers in the brain, neurological impairment and eventually death. Myelin, which is produced by special cells called oligodendrocytes, insulates nerve fibers to allow electrical signals to be conducted normally. Other, more common, myelination diseases include cerebral palsy, transverse myelitis and multiple sclerosis

STEM is up 16% to $1.54 in pre market trading.

Stem Cell ( STEM ) 11/10/08 Breakout Stock

Stem Cells ( STEM ) is breaking out today, 11/10/08, up 40% to $2.40. If you can recall, last week I mentioned that if STEM broke $2.28 it would rip higher. We are seeing that this morning as the volume has picked up since the break above $2.28. STEM is one to watch because if this stock can get some volume, it could really be a day traders delight. Support is at $2.28, Resistance is at $2.53.

Also, watch LVS for a break above $7.20 and $7.60, that could get Las vegas Sands running again.

Dow Jones Open 11/04/08 - Stock Market Report

The Dow Jones and Stock Market opened today 11/04/08 significantly higher then yesterdays close. On the day of the Presidential Election, the Dow Jones opened at 9500, up about 180 points. The S&P 500 was up 20 to 986, and the Nasdaq was up 25 to 1751. Why is the stock market up today? I think it has to do with Libor Rates being down today again today, and that we are just having a relief rally in the stock market. Wall Street hates uncertainty and the market has an Obama victory already priced in. It is looking almost certain that he will win tonight. Here is Art Cashin's views on the stock market and the election.

Biggest Stock Gainers Today - 11/04/08

CIT Group ( CIT ) - CIT is one of the biggest gainers today because the company made a deal with Wells Fargo ( WFC ) where CIT will have a new $500 Million line of credit. This is big news for CIT group!

Stem Cell Stocks: The Stem Cell Stocks, ASTM, STEM, GERN are worth watching today after yesterdays big day. I tlikeSTEM out of the three due to the volume and recent positive news. Stem came out with earnings this morning and reported a better then expected loss per share. A break above $2.28 and the next resistance is $2.53. I only like Stem if it breaks $2.28. Support is still at $2. Watch these levels closely.

Other Stocks to Watch - HIG, LVS, ABK, V, MA, PDO

Dow Jones Open 11/03/08 - Stock Market

The Dow Jones and Stock Market opened today, 11/03/08, mostly flat from Friday's close. The ISM number came out and was very bad, but the market seems to already have priced most of this bad data in. The Dow Jones is trading at 9346 up 22 points. As you know, this can all change really fast but for the most part it looks like a good day. Be sure to check out Art Cashin's election comments from this morning.

Stocks to Watch 11/03/08:

I'm watching the Stem Cell Stocks for a possible trade later today and into tomorrow. These stocks ripped higher four years ago when there was an election. It's looking likely Obama will pull this election out and Democrats favor stem cell research. This could give these stocks further upside. Also, i'm still watching Las Vegas Sands ( LVS ) and Apple ( AAPL ).

Stem Cell Stocks: 11/03/08 - STEM, ASTM, GERN

The Stem Cell stocks are exploding 11/03/08, the day before the Presidential Election as the polls favor Obama as the next President. The following Stem Cell stocks are ones I will be watching:

Stem Cells ( STEM ) $2.05 +42%
Aastrom Biosciences ( ASTM ) $.50 +25.61%
Geron ( GERN ) $4.30 +8%

Last Election, these three stocks exploded in anticipation Al Gore would win, and then they crashed when he didn't. If Obama wins, these three could see further upside.
