Stock Market News April 20, 2009 4/20/09
This morning, 4/20/09, there are several news events that are causing the stock market futures to trade lower as we start one of the busiest weeks for earnings.
Stock Market News - April 20, 2009
Bank Nationalization: US May Convert Banks' Bailouts to Equity Share - Top story of the day in my opinion...futures are tanking on this news!
Bank of America ( BAC ) - BAC reports earnings of .44 cents per share. B of A stock is dropping on this earnings news as investors sell the news.
TARP Repayment: U.S. to put conditions on TARP repayment: report
Jack Bouroudjian, CNBC - Jack Bouroudjian came on CNBC this morning and stated that after he predicted the latest jaw dropping rally, it is time to go back and retest the lows in the next 6 weeks. Jack is one of the few traders I follow out there in Wall Street. Bouroudjian has been spot on over the past year. Art Cashin also said on Friday that he sees a strong pullback coming in the markets. I will be watching 8000 on the Dow closely!

Stock Market News March 17, 2009 3/17/09
The following is a summary of the top stock market news moving the market in today's trading action. I will highlight events that could potentially move the stock market in the next day or two and report things that I am watching.
Stock Market Report - 3.17.09
Building Permits: This morning we got building permits data that was a bit better then expected. Building permits, which are less volatile than the housing starts data, rose 3% in February to a 547,000 annual rate. Permits for single-family units rose 11% to a 373,000 rate, the largest percentage gain in 18 years. So this news was good news this morning.
Aloca ( AA ) - $5.56 Down 9.17% - Alcoa (NYSE:AA) announced today a series of operational and financial actions to significantly improve the Company’s cost structure and liquidity. The operational actions will reduce costs by more than $2.4 billion annually, reduce capital expenditures an additional $1.0 billion in 2010, and improve working capital by $800 million in 2009. The Company is reducing the quarterly common stock dividend from $0.17 to $0.03 per share, saving more than $400 million annually, and launching a public offering of common stock and convertible notes planned to yield proceeds of approximately $1.1 billion
Oil Prices - $48.38 - Oil going up toward resistance at $50.50 - If Oil starts trading above $50 for a few days, you could see a quick move toward $60. This would actually be good for the stock market as oil prices take the temperature of the economy.
Dow Jones 30 Leaders - Wal Mart ( WMT ), ExxonMobile ( XOM ), Home Depot ( HD ), Citigroup ( C ). XOM - Exxon Mobil to build tech center in Shanghai - HD - Home Depot up on the good housing data above.
General Electric ( GE ) - $9.77 Up 1.14% - GE Transportation Signs 47 Million Agreement with Trenitalia
Fed Meeting - Two day Fed meeting starts today, we will get a Fed statement out tomorrow afternoon at 2:15pm Est. This could be a market mover.

Stock Market Report February 4, 2009 2/4/09
Today 2/4/09, the stock market futures are bouncing due to the ADP employment report released at 8:15am. The ADP report showed a loss of 522,000 jobs in the private sector. This news is actually better then expected and you might see stocks rally today. The big number comes on Friday, Feb 6th, as the Government will release the real employment report. This employment report will include the unemployment rate and how many jobs the US lost in January. I will also be looking to see if they revise down the December report since Wall Street did not seem to believe the data.
I will be watching key technical levels today on both the Nasdaq and Dow Jones. I feel the stock market cannot have a sustainable rally until our Government provides some clarity on the banking situation. We need to get these toxic assets off their books somehow or these banking stocks will continue to slide. This will drag the rest of the market down with it. We also need some clarity on the stimulus package.
Oil Markets February 4, 2009
Oil is rising back above $41 today as we await oil supply data coming out later this morning. Oil is finally starting to go up on bad news, the best indicator if you are trying to find a market bottom. If Oil gets back above $43 I think you could test $48-$50 resistance area. Opec is talking about cutting more supplies which is good for the oil market.
Stocks to Watch - 2/4/09
DryShips ( DRYS ) - Drys seems to be back at it again but will now have resistance at around $7.28. I only like this stock over $10, but that's just me. A guest was on CNBC this morning talking about the Baltic Dry Index and says it is improving. This would be good for the world economy. Today, the BDI was up huge and has been up for 13 straight days. This is huge for the bulk shipping stocks.
Disney ( DIS ) reported worse then expected earnings...the stock is down 5%
News Just out: Commercial real estate prices are falling fast! Commercial real estate loans are defaulting at a higher rate.

Geron GERN Stem Cell Stocks 1/23/09
Geron ( GERN ) is out with Stem Cell news this morning, January 23, 2009 - as this company will be the first company testing a human in the world's first human clinical trial involving Stem Cells. Under the new Obama administration, the FDA has approved this trial in which the Bush administration wasn't allowing Government funding for Stem Cell Research.
GERN stock is exploding higher today, to $6.48 Up 24%. Other Stem Cell stocks are higher such as Stem Cells ( STEM ) and Aastrom Biosciences ( ASTM )
Geron Corporation (Nasdaq: GERN) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted clearance of the company's Investigational New Drug (IND) application for the clinical trial of GRNOPC1 in patients with acute spinal cord injury.
The clearance enables Geron to move forward with the world's first study of a human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-based therapy in man. Geron plans to initiate a Phase I multi-center trial that is designed to establish the safety of GRNOPC1 in patients with "complete" American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) grade A subacute thoracic spinal cord injuries.
"The FDA's clearance of our GRNOPC1 IND is one of Geron's most significant accomplishments to date," said Thomas Okarma, Ph.D., M.D., Geron's president and CEO. "This marks the beginning of what is potentially a new chapter in medical therapeutics - one that reaches beyond pills to a new level of healing: the restoration of organ and tissue function achieved by the injection of healthy replacement cells. The ultimate goal for the use of GRNOPC1 is to achieve restoration of spinal cord function by the injection of hESC-derived oligodendrocyte progenitor cells directly into the lesion site of the patient's injured spinal cord."
GRNOPC1, Geron's lead hESC-based therapeutic candidate, contains hESC-derived oligodendrocyte progenitor cells that have demonstrated remyelinating and nerve growth stimulating properties leading to restoration of function in animal models of acute spinal cord injury (Journal of Neuroscience, Vol. 25, 2005).
"The neurosurgical community is very excited by this new approach to treating devastating spinal cord injury," said Richard Fessler, M.D., Ph.D., professor of neurological surgery at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. "Demyelination is central to the pathology of the injury, and its reversal by means of injecting oligodendrocyte progenitor cells would be revolutionary for the field. If safe and effective, the therapy would provide a viable treatment option for thousands of patients who suffer severe spinal cord injuries each year."

Bailout Plan: Congress Making Progress on Saturday 9/26
Today Congress appears to be making progress on the bailout/rescue plan for the financial markets. Hopefully we have a deal by tomorrow night 6pm EST when the Asian Markets open for trading.
If a bailout plan isn't agreed upon by that time....we could be looking at a serious down day on Monday. I think we have a few days grace period to get this done, as long as we don't hear the deal has stalled or looks unlikely.
When we get a deal, I think we will have a nice rally....but then people will focus back on the economy again. It's a vicious circle of pessimism!
Stay Tuned!
