The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 7969 on 4/21/09, as the stock market rallied off the morning lows to gain back half the losses from yesterday. The Dow Jones Futures were lower this morning on several earnings disappointments. After the open, stocks quickly went positive and never looked back. The financials led the rally as we await earnings out of Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley tomorrow morning. Tenet Healthcare ( THC ) was a big winner today as the company announced an earnings surprise for the 1st quarter. Check out my stocks to watch report for Tuesday as well as earnings.

The following is a little Citigroup ( C ) stock technical analysis for April 21, 2009

Citigroup Support & Resistance Levels - 4/21/09

Resistance Levels: $3.00, $3.43, $3.89, $4.48

Support Levels: $2.80, $2.70, $2.62, $2.40

Citigroup stock broke and closed below the 10 day moving average yesterday and is now approaching key support of the 50 day moving average at $2.62. Over the past month, $2.40-$2.70 has been a solid support range for Citi stock and it would take a huge event to break this support level. Since breaking up through $2, Citigroup hasn't looked back so obviously a break below $2 would be horrible but I don't see that happening unless the stress test is bad.

On the upside for Citigroup, a close above $3.43 would be very bullish and I think Citi would retest $3.89-$4. On a longer term basis, a close above last weeks high of $4.48 would send Citi back to test $5.50-$6 For More Technical Analysis - Go Here

FAS - FAZ Stock Analysis April 21, 2009

The Direxion Financial Bull 3X Shares ETF ( FAS ) and the Direxion Financial Bear 3X Shares ETF ( FAZ ) have been very active over the past six months. The following is technical analysis on Financial Bull ( FAS ) for 4/21/09. Knowing the support and resistance levels for FAS will help you trade FAZ.

Fas Support and Resistance Levels - April 21, 2009

Resistance Levels: $7.00, $8.00 $8.41, $10.05

Support Levels: $6.23, $5.86, $5.10, $5.00

FAS stock crashed below the 10 day moving average today similar to the down move in late March when FAS went under $5. The only difference is FAS is trading above the 50 day moving average and a close below this level on Tuesday would be very bearish. I will be watching $6.23 very closely as a close below this level could spark some additional sell pressure. The next level of support for FAS would be the early April low of $5.86. At one of these two levels, I expect a snap back rebound rally which I will be actively buying FAS for the bounce. Fas was just in the $9 on Friday.

As far as FAZ goes, if FAS closes under the 50 day moving average you will see traders really start to buy the FAZ as protection on their other investments. I am waiting for a close above $12.15 before i'd start to feel comfortable holding FAZ overnight. For traders, FAS and FAZ are the two best ETF's to trade in the stock market. Stock Market Futures

The Dow Jones closed below the 10 day moving average and also closed at the lows. The next level of support I am looking at is 7750 which held several times in March and April. If this 7750 level does not hold on a closing basis, I feel the 50 day moving average will be retest at 7536. On the upside, 8000 is now resistance and I would be a seller at this level going forward.

Stocks to Watch - 4/21/09 - Stock Market Ideas

Financials: The Financial sector was hit hard as investors sold shares of Citigroup ( C ) and Bank of America ( BAC ) after B of A's earnings turned out to be from one time gains. On Friday, I said I am not buying Financial Bull 3x ( FAS ) above $9.00 when it was trading around $9.40 per share. In one trading session, FAS has come down $2.00 per share to trade around $7.40. FAS is now trading below the 10 day moving average which is very bearish and it looks like we may get a retest of the 50 day moving average of around $6.25. I will wait this out over the next few days. A lot will ride on the busy week of earnings reports ahead of us this week. The Financial Bear 3x ( FAZ ) is a great stock to trade on any stock market weakness.
