The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 9135 on 8/17/09, as the stock market fell big after Asian markets tanked overnight. The Dow Jones Futures were only down 20 Sunday evening but when we woke up this morning, they were down nearly 200 at one point. The stock market tried to bounce between 2pm - 3pm but was short lived. Technology and Emerging Market stocks were hit the hardest. Late in the day shares of Apple Inc. (AAPL) broke down through $160. When you see weakness in a strong stock like Apple, you have to be concerned. On the flip side of that, shares of Citigroup, Inc. (C) continue to show strength despite the big sell off.
While the Apple sell off is cause for concern, I will not be worried until the Dow Jones closes below support at 9000. This would set up a retest of the 50 day moving average located just under 8800. If the 50 day doesn't hold, we could be headed back down to the 200 day moving average. If the Dow can stay above 9000 on a closing basis, we could easily go right back to 9400 again. Check out some of the events I will be watching for Tuesday.
