The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 8529 on 6/29/09, as the stock market surged on the day that Bernie Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in jail for a ponzi scheme. The Dow Jones Futures started the day slightly higher but right after the stock market opened, stocks surged and never really looked back. Art Cashin, floor trader on the NYSE, seems to think that what we are seeing is quarter ending window dressing. This is a term used to describe when fund managers have to come off the sidelines and buy or sell stocks based on what happened during the quarter. One important thing to note is the last two weeks of trading have been on super low volume. If the rally is going to continue and be sustained, we need better volume as a sign of conviction. I don't see the volume coming back until the first few weeks of September.

Oil rallied over $71 today, a sign of further strength in the oil market. The key thing to watch as far as oil goes is the $73 level which is technical resistance. Check out some of the events I will be watching for Tuesday.
