Volatility Index VIX 1/7/09 - January 7, 2009

The Volatility Index ( VIX ) has spiked with today's ( 1/7/09 ) downtrend. After plunging below 40, the VIX is hitting 42.66 at 2:30pm est.

What is the VIX and what does it tell us?

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) is a key measure of market expectations of near-term volatility conveyed by SP 500 stock index option prices. Since its introduction in 1993, VIX has been considered by many to be the world's premier barometer of investor sentiment and market volatility.

The recent low for the VIX was recorded on 1/2/09 in which the VIX hit 36.88. During the 2008 stock market crash the VIX hit as high as 89.53 which was recorded on 10/24/08.

Dow Jones Close 12/3/08 - Stock Market Closing Prices

Stock Market Closing Prices - 12/03/08

Dow Jones Industrial Average ( DJIA ) Close - 8591.69 Up 172.60
Nasdaq Stock Market Close - 1492.38 Up 42.58
S&P 500 Close - 870.69 Up 21.88

Libor Rates - 12/03/08

1 Month - 1.89%
3 Month - 2.20%

Commodities Closing Prices - 12/03/08

Gold - 775
Oil - 46.96
Natural Gas - 6.38

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 8591.69 on 12/03/08, as investors ignored more bad economic data such as the ADP Employment Report and the Fed's Beige Book to storm higher for the second straight day. The Stock Market Futures started the day down this morning and the Dow Jones hit a low of 8234 but the spiked to the resistance level of 8500. For the most part, the Dow Jones traded in a range today from the 10 day moving average at 8300 to 8500. In the last half hour, we managed to break and stay above 8500 and move toward 8600. We are trading virtually identical to last Tuesday's trading session! I am watching to see which way we go coming out of this range. Friday will be key with the Jobs Report coming out in the morning. This event could set the stage as to which direction we head to next. I will have more technical analysis later, right HERE.

Research in Motion ( RIMM ) hit a low of $35 this morning after warning about 3rd quarter earnings due out December 18th. RIMM stock was strong during the afternoon hours and actually tested $40 before failing. This is a crucial level to watch for the future. Another stock that was on fire today was First Solar ( FSLR ) up more then 14%. FSLR broke a key resistance level of $131 and this is very bullish!

Volatility Index ( VIX ) - The VIX ended up at 60.70 today and there are still signs of extreme volatility in this stock market.

Dow Jones Close 12/1/08 - Stock Market Closing Prices

Stock Market Closing Prices - 12/01/08

Dow Jones Industrial Average ( DJIA ) Close - 8149.09 Down 681

S&P 500 Close - 816.17 Down 80

3 Month - 2.22%

Commodities Closing Prices - 12/01/08

Gold - 770
Oil - 49.13
Natural Gas - 6.56

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 8149 on 12/1/08, as investors sold stocks following a huge week of gains last week. The Stock Market Futures were down this morning after Asian and European markets fell overnight. We gapped below Friday's low of 8762 which was a bad sign so I sold out of all but a small position in Google ( GOOG ) that I am holding. I was tempted to buy some of the short etf's such as QID & SKF but didn't pull the trigger. I am waiting on the sidelines for more trades to develop such as Potash ( POT ). I would also like to buy back Mercadolibre ( MELI ) at some point after letting it go at $12 this morning. It turns out we are officially in a recession and it started back in December of 2007. At the end of the day today, the Dow Jones broke through the lows and also the 10 day moving average. This is very bearish! This has me thinking that we will go back and test 8000 soon which is the next major support level for the Dow Jones. I will have a new chart posted HERE later today. Meredith Whitney was on CNBC this afternoon, 12/1/08 and basically echoed what she said on Wednesday during her Bloomberg interview. She ended the interview today by saying her biggest sell in the financials right now is Wells Fargo ( WFC ).

For now, I will wait and not get back into any new positions until we either test 8000 or close back over 8500. This limits risk by a mile.

Volatility Index ( VIX ) - 12/1/08

The VIX spiked back over 65 today closing at 67.30. When we hit the 80's we usually get a nice bounce in the markets so monitor this indicator closely.

Volatility Index ( VIX ) for 11/11/08

Today, 11/11/08, the Volatility Index is going back up, hitting 65 just after 11am eastern time.

If you recall, several weeks ago we hit near 90 on the VIX when we hit the lows. Last week we hit around 45 when the market was going up on President - elect Obama's win.

After hitting a new low today, Google ( GOOG ) is actually showing a little bit of strength. BIDU and AAPL are steady while RIMM is weak. These are stocks I am trading right now.

Dow Jones Close 10/24/08 - Stock Market Closing Price, Vix

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was another roller coaster ride on Friday, 10/24/08, closing at 8378, Down 312 points. The morning started with traders and investors waking up to a " limit down " in the stock market futures due to the crash of Asian and European stock markets overnight. A limit down is a circuit breaker for when the markets plummets to unusual levels...they stop futures trading until the stock market opens. In this case, it was 5% down for pre market. Everyone thought when the stock market opened at 9:30am, the next limit down would be hit at 10% or 1100 points on the Dow Jones....keep in mind, these limit down figures were made several months ago when the stock market was much higher. 1100 points down on the Dow Jones would have been more like a 14% plunge.

So what happened at the open? Everyone was expecting total panic and selling but the buyers quickly came in and the markets rallied. The Dow has been trading in a range all day from 8275 to 8525. Many big traders are still calling for the capitulation we did not get Friday, to come Monday. Monday will most likely be one of the most crutial days to the stock market yet....and it will start with what the Asian markets do on Sunday Night 10/26/08. I will be posting a blog during Sunday Night Football on NBC, so make sure you check back!

Dow Jones Technical Analysis 10/24/08:

Ok, so today the Dow Jones made a low this morning of 8187 but it has tested that 8200 level several times and it has held. Today is the first time i've actually seen panic buying set in for awhile. When we did not get the big plunge most people were expecting, buyers, whether they were short sellers covering their positions, were really stepping over each other to buy. All day the markets have been really twitchy to the upside....almost like the markets are a coiled spring ready to rocket higher. Your resistance on the Dow Jones is 8700, if we can close above that and stay up there for a few days, we could indeed rocket higher next week. However, there are some key events next week to watch. They are noted below.

Economic Data for next week:

Consumer Confidence - 10/28/08 10am
Federal Reserve FOMC Statement - 10/29/08 2:15pm
Jobless Claims - 10/30 8:30am

Dow Jones Close 10/23/08 - Dow Jones Analysis, Vix

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was a roller coaster ride Thursday, 10/23/08, closing at 8692, UP 174 points. The stock market volatility was at its highest today as the Dow Jones was up around 220 points in the morning only to do a 360 turnaround to down 200 in the afternoon. That was a 400 point swing! At about 3pm eastern time stocks reversed once again and the Dow Jones rallied into the close. There was a rumor on the NYSE floor and from trading desks that the White House race between McCain and Obama has tightened, CNBC is reporting. The Nasdaq remained down 12 with the technology sector staying weak but reversing off the lows. Key stocks reversing on the Nasdaq were the four horseman, Apple (AAPL ), Google ( GOOG ), Amazon.com ( AMZN ), and Research in Motion ( RIMM ). RIMM went from $44 to $46.40 and I actually caught that ride upward and am now back into cash going into tomorrow. RIMM to me is very attractive under $45 per share.

Dow Jones Technical Analysis - 10/23/08

The Dow Jones was up around 200 points this morning....just giving that 8700 level a retest from yesterday as I was talking about. The Dow rejected that level and started to head
lower but has bounced off 8243 this afternoon. If we break through that on 10/24/08 you can pretty much bet we retest 8000 again. Remember the 10/10/08 intraday low was 7773 so if we break through Dow 8000 that level would be next support. If you are a long term investor riding this stock market out and we close below 7773....i'd suggest not looking at the stock market for several days. On a brighter note....we closed strong today back up near 8700. If we can close back over 8700 and really build a base there, eventually moving toward 9000, a case could be made that today's retest of the lows was successful....then we could actually start to move higher again. I almost forget what a rally feels like. I'm not talking about
these big moves higher...I'm talking about a long, slow, sustainable rally where the
volatility is low but we move up 50-100 points everyday....that is what we need right now to bring confidence back to the stock market. Don't forget Carter Worth's Bottom Call! Carter Worth has been spot on lately.

Jim Cramer on the Solar Stocks

Jim Cramer came on CNBC this afternoon and stated that he cannot own any of the solar stocks right now....he even called First solar ( FSLR ), Fourth Solar. Jim Cramer says stay away from Solar!!!

Volatility Index ( VIX ) - 10/23/08

The Vix spiked to around 79 today until 3pm hit and the market reversed to move higher. Since that time it hit 73...so a six point move. At noon the Vix was 65 and moved 14 points up to that 79 level. I say tomorrow we go into the 80's for sure. The Vix closed today at 69.50

Dow Jones Close 10/22/08 - Dow Jones Analysis - Vix

The Dow Jones Industrial Average took a beating today, 10/22/08, closing at 8520, down 513 points. It is important to note that todays sell-off didn't really have anything to do with the credit markets but rather a lack of buyers and redemptions from hegde funds and mutual funds. Funds are still being forced to liquidate their holdings in order to raise cash. There are also fears of how bad this recession will be.

Dow Jones Technical Analysis:

The Dow Jones DJIA broke a key technical support level of 8700 today after a big fight earlier in the day. The fact that we broke this key support level will bring additional selling pressure from technical traders. Meanwhile...if we take out 8700 on the upside we will move a lot higher. Your next levels are 8,000 and the intrday low of 7773 we hit on Friday October 10th.

Volatility Index ( VIX )

The Vix spiked again today hitting over 72 at one point....can you believe the VIX is higher then the price of Oil? I can't!! Watch this Vix closely as we topped out at around 78 last week...after several calm days the volatility seems to be coming back.
