The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 7750 on 3/25/09, as the stock market came back from a fast sell-off during the afternoon. The Dow Jones Futures were slightly higher in pre market and then stocks surged on postive Durable Goods & New Home Sales data.
There was a failed UK debt offering overnight but Wall Street seemed to ignore this until we had some demand issues with our debt offerings during the afternoon. All the major stock market averages reversed and began to tank rapidly. The S&P 500 broke 800 and hit a low of 791.40 before bouncing back above the 800 level. Financial Bull ( FAS ) stock broke $6.00 and went down another $0.50 before bouncing back above $6.00. The fact that every major dip seems to be bought is a very positive sign. Stock Market Sell-Off March 25, 2009 3/25/09

The stock market is selling off this afternoon, 3/25/09, after positive economic data was released in the morning. We saw a better then expected Durable Goods number and better then expected Home Sales.

The Dow Jones was up 200 at one point but began selling off just after 1:30pm est. This was a rapid sell-off with heavy volume. I think this sell-off is due to a debt offering that failed in the UK. We also had a bad one here in the US. We have also been overbought, so investors are taking profits.

If you have been trading FAS and FAZ, it is important to note that FAS stopped going down right at the lower end of support - $6. If FAS closes below $6, I might just have to jump in FAZ stock.

The Dow Jones pulled back today but still managed to close over the 50 day moving average. This is a support level worth watching. The next support level that would have to hold would be the 7500 level. If this rally continues, I could see the Dow briefly going into the low 8000's before hitting resistance. The downtrend line will be very tough to break.

S&P 500 Support & Resistance Levels - March 24, 2009, March 25, 2009

Resistance Levels: 824, 840, 868, 875

Support Levels: 810, 804, 800, 789, 770, 766

The S&P 500 broke up through and closed over 800 yesterday, this level now becomes support. As you can see from my downtrend line, the S&P still has further room to rise on a technical basis. As long as the S&P stays above 800, I could see it rising back to the 850-870 level with no problem. The minute we get a close back under 800, you need to started getting cautious as the S&P would then be testing the 50 day moving average again. Things are going to get real interesting in the next 5 or 6 trading sessions!! 800 is your line in the sand. For More Technical Analysis - Go Here
