The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 9069 on 7/23/09, as the stock market soared on better then expected earnings as well as better then expected existing home sales. The Dow Jones Futures started the day slightly higher but right after the open we received the home sales data and stocks exploded to the upside. All throughout the day the stock market averages were strong with no major pullbacks. Even the volume was very high ( for a summer Thursday ) as well!

The hottest sector today was the Conglomerates. Stocks such as 3M Co. (MMM), Fortune Brands Inc. (FO), and ABB Ltd. (ABB) saw huge gains.

Tonight we will receive earnings figures out of Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN), and Baidu, Inc. (BIDU). These reports will set the stage for the stock market tomorrow. Check out some of the events I will be watching for Friday.

Dow Jones Breaks 9000 Today - July 23, 2009

7/23/09 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average just broke through 9000 today and seems to be hovering here with no major profit taking. Keep an eye on the next important level of 9088 which is the 2009 high. If the Dow Jones can close over this level, we could be looking at another surge in which i'd be taking profits.

Nevertheless, given where we were in March, things have improved greatly!

The BDI data is critical for how the DryBulk Shipping Stocks such as DryShips Inc ( DRYS ), Excel Maritime Carriers Ltd( EXM ), Diana Shipping Inc ( DSX ), Genco Shipping & Trading Limited ( GNK ), TBS International Limited ( TBSI ), Navios Maritime ( NM ), Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc. ( EGLE ), Paragon Shipping Inc. ( PRGN ), Star Bulk Carriers Corp. ( SBLK ), and OceanFreight Inc ( OCNF ) will trade during the day. As you probably know, the Dry Bulk Shipping index can tell you a lot about the state of the World Economy. When Bulk Shipping Rates are at all time highs, the World Economy is outstanding. It seems as though everyone is watching Libor rates these days. Today's Libor Rates for 7/23/09, are: 1 Month Libor Rate - 0.285%. & 3 Month Libor Rate - 0.504%. The overnight Libor rate is 0.229%. As you can see, Libor Rates have changed today, July 23, 2009.
The overnight libor dropped, the 1 month libor stayed the same, and the 3 month libor rate went up.

Stocks to Watch - 7/23/09 - Stock Market Ideas

Hemispherx Biopharma, Inc. (HEB) - HEB stock fell big on Wednesday after the company held a conference call and stated that they are still waiting for a response from the FDA on their CFS drug Ampligen. Investors did not like the news and pressed the sell button. I am watching the 50 day moving average which is located at $2.19, a close below this would be bearish but this is also an area, if held, could produce a nice bounce.

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (CTIC) - CTIC had a big break out Wednesday, I am watching these resistance levels. $1-72-$1.73, $1.78, $1.85, and $1.90. A break through any of these will result should result in a retest of the next. A break up through $1.90 would be huge and CTIC would then go back into the $2. I now like pullbacks into the $1.40's as a buy.

Human Genome Sciences Inc. (HGSI) - Human Genome stock had another nice day after an upgrade to outperform by Bernstein on Tuesday. Still looking for a break above $15 which will result in a new breakout.

Orexigen Therapeutics, Inc. (OREX) - OREX stock had another breakout after releasing huge weight loss drug news Friday night. OREX could be headed toward the 52 week high of $12.23. This is one stock to watch closely!

Las Vegas Sands Corp. (LVS) - Jim Cramer highlighted LVS when looking at stock technical analysis Tuesday night. Las Vegas Sands technicals are improving greatly and I would be a buyer of pullbacks into the $8's if I get a chance. Keep an eye on resistance at $1.50 and $11.84, a close over these and its smooth sailing for a new breakout to the upside.

MGM Mirage (MGM) - Watching resistance at $7.01 and $8.59 on MGM.

Antigenics Inc. (AGEN) - Watching $2.70 and $3.34 Resistance levels. AGEN broke out on heavy volume Wednesday - watch it!

Sequenom Inc. (SQNM) - SQNM took a breather after a huge breakout Tuesday....worth keeping on your radar, keep an eye out for a break above $5.34

BioCryst Pharmaceuticals Inc. (BCRX) - BCRX exploded higher again Wednesday as a looming conference where the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee will get together and discuss the swine flu. This conference will get underway on Thursday. Other stocks to watch regarding this conference are: Vical Inc. (VICL) - Novavax, Inc. (NVAX) - Sinovac Biotech Ltd. (SVA) - GlaxoSmithKline plc (GSK) - Generex Biotechnology Corp. (GNBT)

Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ)
Daily Finan. Bull 3X Shs(ETF)(FAS) - FAS traded back down near $45, I am still willing to buy FAZ when FAS trades near $50. I am waiting for FAS to trade back below $40 before I start buying again. I continue to be patient!

Citigroup Inc (C:NYSE) - Citigroup had a huge reversal off the $2.62 low Wednesday. We could be looking at a double bottom here and C stock could be getting ready to rally again. If Citigroup breaks back over $3 I may make a small buy but would really want to get in on a break above $3.20. Monitor this situation

Bank of America Corp ( BAC ) - Bank of America Corporation broke the $12.40 level I talked about yesterday but then failed to do much. I am now watching $12.48 as the next buy level.

American Intl Group, Inc. (AIG) - Nothing has really changed with AIG - still waiting for a break above $14 to buy for a trade. A break below $13 would be bearish but the volume has been drying up lately.

Buy on the Dip - Below is a list of stocks I am willing to buy if we get a pullback. In addition to the price I want to pay, I also provide key levels to watch which are known as support and resistance levels. Support = buying support ( where buyers are likely to be located ), Resistance = selling resistance ( where the sellers are likely to be selling ).

Visa Inc. (NYSE: V) - $60 - Love Visa long term - Support $64 and $62 which are the 10 & 50 day moving averages, Resistance $67.20 which was the June 12th high ( and 7/21/09 ) then $70.

MasterCard (MA) - $156 - Also love Mastercard long term - Support $169, Resistance 188.59 which was the late April high.

Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan, Inc. (POT) - $85 - Support $90, $85 - Resistance $97, $100

Apple (AAPL) - $120 - Support $143, $137, Resistance $158, $167

Palm, Inc. (PALM) - $13 - Support $13.33, Resistance $16.80

Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM) - $60 - Support $74.30, $72, $69, Resistance $76-$77

Ford Motor Co. (F) - $5.30 - Support $5.80, Resistance $6.54 which is major resistance
First Solar (FSLR) - Pullbacks into the $140's will now be bought by me
Continental Resources Inc. (CLR) - Looking to buy below $25
