The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 8133 on 4/17/09, as the stock market went higher on decent earnings out of General Electric ( GE ) and Citigroup ( C ). Bank of America ( BAC ) is on deck for Monday. The Dow Jones Futures fluctuated between positive and negative with the stock market averages trading down most of the morning. Stocks turned around as usual in the afternoon but gave back most of the gains by the close of trading. DryShips ( DRYS ) was a real standout Friday going up almost 30% as the company raised 500 million in new capital. Wells Fargo ( WFC ) had a great week after preannouncing earnings last Thursday. Beacon Power Corporation (BCON) - $0.74 Up 17.46% - Obama Admin Unveils $4 Bln In Smart-Grid Power Tech Funding - history shows that BCON's stock bottoms in April and rises until July when it is the hottest. When you have power outages the stock tops out and sells off.

As you can see below, Citigroup ( C ) reported earnings 4/17/09. Citi stock is rising in pre market, $4.41 Up 9.98% off this earnings news.

Citi Reports First Quarter Revenues of $24.8 Billion

- Net Income of $1.6 Billion, Loss Per Share of $0.18

As far as Citigroup's stock price goes, the real test will be $5 per share. If they can push Citi through $5 and close the stock over $5, big institutional money will start to flow back in. Keep in mind, this all started with a break up through $3 last week. The only thing I really got wrong was how the market reacted to earnings today. This earnings report has every possible good thing added ( market to market ect ), just wait until the third quarter!! As for now, as long as Citi remains over $4 you can trade it from the long side.

Stock Market Futures

The Dow Jones broke through the 8113 high from last week. Since closing back over 8000 yesterday, it is becoming more and more evident how strong this stock market truly is. I continue to eye the 8300-8500 level as strong resistance, it would take a lot to get through 8500 but it could happen. Pullbacks to the 10 day moving average have been heavily bought and this is where I continue to buy. We will eventually retest the 50 day moving average but at what level is the question!! This test of the 50 day moving average will be the real test....if it fails, we could attempt to retest the lows at some point this year. As for now, I am bullish as long as we keep closing over 8000.

Citigroup ( C ) Earnings April 17, 2009 - 8am EST

Stocks to Watch - 4/17/09 - Stock Market Ideas

Financials: All eyes will be on Citigroup ( C ) Friday as the company will release earnings before the opening bell. Financials remain very strong going into this earnings report. I have no idea what will happen after Citi reports but I will be watching closely. I will most likely trade FAS or FAZ at the open as I always do!

DryShips ( DRYS ) - Very interesting action lately, has closed back over both 10 & 50 day moving averages for several days. If $6.17 is broken, DRYS will be on the move again. I have a small position with a stop at $5.40.

Google ( GOOG ) - Google reports earnings Thursday night - Option action says a 7% move one way or another - I'd say Google crushes earnings but I have no position.

Pier 1 Imports ( PIR ) - I traded PIR on Thursday, bought at $0.96, sold when it broke up through $1.00, big mistake. PIR went right into the $1.20's and has held most of the day. PIR stock has been very strong and it could have more upside Friday. Dips back under $1.00 will be bought!

Unisys ( UIS ) - Very strong on Thursday with positive news, will be watching closely on Friday.
