The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 8469 on 5/12/09, as the stock market was very volatile today. The Dow Jones Futures were up in pre market but the major averages were down most of the trading day. At 2pm, the buyers stepped in and stocks began to rise off their lows. Two companies came out with stock offerings today which could have been the cause for the early morning slide. These companies were Ford ( F ) and Anadarko Petroleum Corporation ( APC ). From a technical point of view, the S&P 500 tested and closed over 900 today. This is a very bullish signal.

Two good long term stocks that broke out today were:

Potash Corp./Saskatchewan (USA) ( POT ) - Potash has not been above $100 since Mid October 2008 when the stock market was falling off a cliff. Today, POT broke through $100 like a hot knife through butter. As Jim Rodgers would say, we are going back to our roots and farming will again be king again. I like Potash on dips.

Ctrip.com International, Ltd. (ADR) ( CTRP ) - Another stock Jim Rodgers likes which I stumbled upon a year ago in his book - A Bull in China, is CTRP. CTRP reported better then expected earnings today. A close over $40.88 would set up a run back to $50. Buy on dips.

Cell Therapeutics ( CTIC ) stock is trading down in afterhours on May 11, 2009 because of two pieces of news released by the company. I actually think it's not so bad news. CTIC is selling stock at $1.25 while it was only $0.40 two weeks ago.

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. Announces Single Institutional Investor Purchases $20 Million of Common Stock and Warrants

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq and MTA: CTIC) (the "Company") today announced that it has sold $20 million of shares of common stock at $1.25 per share and warrants to purchase shares of common stock in a registered offering to a single institutional investor. The Company currently expects to utilize up to $17.8 million in cash currently on hand and/or cash received in connection with this offering to pay for its anticipated tender offer to retire between $83.2 to $89.2 million of its convertible debt. The Company anticipates that the consideration for the tender offer will be in the range of $250 to $300 per $1,000 par value of the bonds.

The Dow Jones pulled back today after making a new 4 month high on Friday. One thing I am watching closely is the 10 day moving average which is located at 8333.62 and rising rapidly. Stocks to Watch - 5/12/09 - Stock Market Ideas

Financials: Was this a one day dip in the financials or the start of a bigger pullback? I continue to watch the following bank stocks for trading opportunities.

Direxion Financial Bear 3X Shares (NYSE: FAZ)
Direxion Financial Bull 3X Shares (NYSE: FAS) - If $10 fails, I will be jumping into FAZ

Citigroup Inc (C:NYSE) - Citigroup stock is hanging in there after skyrocketing last week, support is $3.70 and then $3.50. Expect fireworks when Citi breaks through $4.48.

Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:BAC) - BAC stock broke Friday's low of $13.55, waiting for B of A to get back above this level before I trade it on the long side.

Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC) - WFC still has support at around $24....should be a solid support level just above the recent stock offering.

Huntington Bancshares Inc. (HBAN) - I believe I just heard Jim Cramer say on CNBC that he'd rather own HBAN better management. ( Out of all the Regional Bank Stocks ). HBAN is now over the 200 day moving average at $5.66. The 200 day should act as a nice support level going forward.

Fifth Third Bancorp ( FITB ) - FITB stock bounced off the 200 day moving average Monday between $8.07-$8.09. FITB made a high today at $9.15 so that is your first resistance level and then you have $9.53.

Dendreon Corp. (DNDN) - DNDN quietly up 10% Monday after raising capital last week.

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (CTIC) - CTIC stock is resting in the high $1.40's. I'd have to say CTIC wants to go higher and test last weeks high of $1.85. I will definitely be trading CTIC on Tuesday.

MGM Mirage (MGM) - Watching MGM on Tuesday, this stock has a nice turnaround Monday into positive territory while the market was down. Resistance at $14.01.

Ford stock has been a huge surprise over the past two months. I do think that it's probably overdone to the upside and in need of a healthy correction but I could say the same thing about many stocks right now. If the correction does come, there is nice support around $5.00-$5.50. When Ford got back over $5, Mutual funds were allowed to start buying again as most don't own stocks under $5. I also love pullbacks to the 50 and 200 day moving averages.
On the upside, Ford broke up through the July 2008 high of $6.33 and the next major resistance level is located at $8.79. For more Technical Analysis - Go Here
