The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 7976 on 4/6/09, as the stock market went down on a downgrade on some of the key banks by Mike Mayo. The Dow Jones Futures were positive all night but when Mayo's letter was released stocks began to sell-off.
Meredith Whitney - April 6, 2009
After the stock market opened, the Dow Jones went under 7900 but then rallied back toward the end of the day. Meredith Whitney came on CNBC and said she is less bearish in the short term as the mark to market rules will help the banks when they report 1st quarter earnings. She said she would not want to be short most of the financials in April but after April she would short once again. She did note that State Street ( STT ) is the only stock she would want to buy on the long side if she were buying financials. So in a few words, she would not be short the stock market right now until May. The stress test will cause more grim new for the banks. The stock market actually rallied a little on this news.
