The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 8076 on 4/24/09, as the stock market went up on better then expected new homes sale data as well as details of the bank stress test. The Dow Jones Futures started the day higher as Ford ( F ) released earnings. The stock market rallied at the open and never looked back until immediately after the stress test details were released where the Dow went from Up 120 to only Up 55. One thing I noticed was Apple ( AAPL ) stock very weak as the overall stock market was rising. At 3:15pm Est, AAPL was breaking through the lows of the day as the Nasdaq hit 1700.
As far as stock market technicals go, the Dow is at the high end of the recent range ( 7750-8200 ). A break above 8190 could set up the spike to 8300-8500. 7750 has been a solid support level over the past 3 months, if this level is closed below, it will be your first major sign of weakness. The S&P 500 has support at 825-835, a close below that range and I think the 780 could get tested. On the upside, 900 is not out of the question but I just can't see it holding 900 for very long. Next week will be another busy earnings week as some of the big energy companies are due to report. Of course, look for the results of the Bank Stress Test to be released on May 4th, 2009.
