The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 7170 on 3/12/09, as the stock market exploded to the upside on better then expected bad news on General Electric ( GE ) this morning. GE's credit rating was downgraded which is very bad but remains in stable condition. The Dow Jones Futures were down over 100 points this morning but then we got a good retail sales number followed by the above GE news. During the afternoon hours, stocks exploded higher as shorts scrambled to cover. All of the sudden, everyone loves financials again. Financial Bull 3X ( FAS ) stock hit a high of $5.18 and is up 108% since Monday. Wells Fargo ( WFC ) hit $14 and is up 80% since Friday. Bank of America ( BAC ) hit $6 and is up 100% since Friday. Whoa! Not sure how long this can last after the carnage we saw last week but it is definitely and eye opener.
All major averages have now closed over the 10 day moving average for 3 straight days. On Tuesday, we got the first signal that this rally was for real when the Dow closed over the 10 day moving average. I would be a little cautious jumping in here however because nothing has really changed and we've gone up so much in such a short period of time. I am eyeing Financial Bear 3X ( FAZ ) when this rally runs out of steam.
