The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 7937 on 2/2/09, as the stock market fell yet again in continuation with Friday's down move. The Dow Jones was weak most of the day with the Nasdaq clinging to postive territory due to a strong technology sector. Stocks rallied off their lows during the afternoon hours but at around 1pm, Macy's ( M ) announced a cut of up to 7,000 jobs and a dividend cut. This news caused the Dow Jones to tank once again plunging to the lows of the day, under 7900. In the final hour, stocks ralliued once again with the Dow coming back to near positive and the Nasdaq jumping over 20 points. The good news? The panic selling seems to have gone away, we weren't seeing the type of volatility as we saw in the September and October months of 2008. The VIX volatility indicator only spiked 5% to 47 today. Tomorrow could be setting up for a snap back rally as we are oversold. I will have full technical analysis on the stock market tonight, Right Here.
