Art Cashin Comments - July 8, 2009
I think we will know the coarse of the stock market by July 17, 2009. Whether we retest the lows or not, we will have an answer by the end of next week. As far as earnings go, I an discounting the earnings and focusing on the outlook.
The first stimulus package was part illusion and hope, we misused it, we may not be able to help ourselves now the we actually need it.
Stay tuned................

Art Cashin Comments - July 1, 2009
I think the market would really like to rally, so there is usually slight prejudice in the first three trading days of the month as well as going into a holiday weekend.
The enemy of all this is that the trading is so light that any piece of news could really move that market in either direction

Art Cashin was on CNBC this morning, June 30, 2009 - and gave some comments about what he is seeing in the stock market right now.
We are at 8500 again....are we still in the sideways trade?
Looks like we will continue...stock market is looking tired. We are waiting to see a break out of this range. It can go either way at this point, we are just watching and waiting.
Earnings are upon us:
I suspect we will see no visibility, the bar for earnings is low so they should be able to meet those. The key will be the outlook going forward. There are signs that we cannot see ahead. If Oil rises above $74, you could see a short covering spike and that could hurt things.

Nouriel Roubini March 31 2009 3/31/09 CNBC
Nouriel Roubini, " Dr. Doom, " came on CNBC this morning and gave comments on what he is seeing in the stock market and financial sector. Nouriel Roubini has been calling this meltdown and has been right for 3 years. He has a downside target for the S&P 500 at 600 and believes this is just another bear market rally. Nouriel believes recent lows will be tested again.
Toxic Asset Plan:
- It will work for awhile but its still not going to stop the problem because they might sell assets below value.
- No one knows what the bad assets are worth, some banks will resist selling them at low prices
- It is time for a special insolvency regime for institutions
- Government bears risks after first losses of toxic loans
- If economy gets worse, it could get ugly very quickly
- There is still a wealth transfer taking place
- Still think some banks must fail and get taken over
Light at the end of the tunnel - We are going to avoid a depression - since they are using everything in their power to avoid this ( the bazooka ) - But it's going to be a long way out of this.
We are close to a stock market bottom but this is just another bear market rally. I still see downside risk more then upside risks for the stock market.
I've been right for three years, in my view, this is still a bear market rally. I see the previous lows being tested again. I will be the first to tell you when I see a recovery. You saw the market get pushed down 3-4% on the GM news yesterday. This is a very shaky stock market!!
Housing prices will fall by another 15-20% - Housing market has not bottomed out. I am still much more bearish then consensus.

Art Cashin CNBC 3/27/09 March 27, 2009
Art Cashin was on CNBC this morning, March 27, 2009 - and gave some comments about what he is seeing in the stock market right now.
Are there any Bears left Art? Can this rally last?
Window Dressing: You are seeing some window dressing - Fund managers are seeing this sharp rally and its making headlines, - they are attempting to buy the winners so they show up in their portfolios ( when the statements go out ). Today may be the last important day...we will see what happens at the end of the day.
Raise Cash? I thought there would be a powerful rally weeks ago, there might be a little bit of steam left in this rally. 70% of stocks are above 50 day moving average, when you see 80% the rally starts to die. We might have a change in direction around Easter...just not sure which way yet.
Shorts have had fear placed back on their plate...I think they are nervous now but if we get another dip, they might try and push it down once again.

Art Cashin CNBC 3/24/09 March 24, 2009
Art Cashin was on CNBC this morning, March 24, 2009 - and gave some comments about the explosive rally we saw yesterday. Art Cashin came on CNBC around 2:30pm and said yesterday's stock market rally would either start to fade or we will have a fireworks explosion to the upside. The Dow Jones ended up going up an additional 200 points!
Art Cashin Comments -3/24/09
How impressive was the rally?
It was a stand out day, 97% of nyse stocks traded up, the VIX didn't pullback, but you can't take anything away from the rally. This current rally ranks in the Top 10 rallies. We punched through 804 resistance on the S&P 500, we are now overbought, we will have to rest here and wait to see what comes out of Washington.
Toxic Asset Comments:
Will the sellers sell at low prices?
If they sell, what will they do with the money? Probably pay the TARP back as quick as they can, they don't want the mother in the kitchen ( Washington ). Goldman Sachs came out yesterday and said they would do this.

Art Cashin was on CNBC this morning, March 17, 2009 - and gave some comments about the stock market on St Patrick's Day 2009.
Art Cashin Comments -3/17/09
Is the stock market rally / bounce over?
The jury still out, yesterday the market go ahead of itself, hit some resistance around 7400, and then closed down. We would not like to have two down days in a row.....more down action could take us down to retest 720 on the S&P 500.
If this rally isn't the real deal we will fail badly, but from that will spring the real rally.
Whats next?
Watching for what comes out of TALF, if that doesn't work, the Fed might get aggressive and go in and buy toxic assets.

Stock Market 3/11/09 March 11, 2009
After a huge rally yesterday, stock market futures are pointing higher for pre market trading this morning. We are seeing a nice follow through after yesterday's gains.
Stock Market Report - March 11, 2009
All major stock market averages ended over the 10 day moving average yesterday. This is a technical breakout that could have legs. Keep in mind, it is just a bounce as all of these rallies have been. We won't know if 6500 was a stock market bottom until we go back and retest it. 95% of stock market bottoms are retested so i'd be selling into this rally. I can see the Dow going up to 7500-8000 and then failing.
Oil Prices 3/11/09 - I noticed yesterday that Nymex crude oil hit a high of around 47.90 and then started to roll over. Oil is now trading at $45 in pre market this morning. I'd be cautious buying oil on this dip. We are still stuck in this range between $35-$50 and right now we are near the higher end. I did notice T Boone Pickens call for oil prices to go to $60 before $40 but he has been wrong since Oil broke down in July. Also, there are around 60 million barrels of oil sitting around in tanker ships waiting to be unloaded in the $50's.
Gold Prices 3/11/09 - Gold is trading around $900 and is technically broken. There is a ton of supply that came from people pawning in their gold when it was near $1000. I think the gold trade was overextended and I will look to reload in the mid to low $800's. I have no doubt that Gold prices will again go and stay above $1000 eventually.
Stock Market March 11, 2009 - It looks like the bank stocks are hot once again, Bank of America ( BAC ) is above $5 in pre market. I would keep an eye on FAS, if you see that stock start to break down, the stock market will correct. Another stock to watch is GE. Here are a list of stocks that could perform well today. Here is a list of the Top 10 Stock Gainers of 2009. Enjoy!

Jim Cramer JP Morgan JPM 3/10/09 - March 10, 2009
Jim Cramer of CNBC said during his Stop Trading segment that you have to see Jp Morgan ( JPM ) go into the $20's before you can declare a " stock market bottom" for 2009 and declare today's rally more then a bear market bounce. Keep an eye on JPM stock as we trade over the next several weeks.
Keep in mind, Jim Cramer was not bullish over the past week when his friend Doug Kass made bottom statements for the S&P 500. The Doug Kass bottom is actually 693 on the S&P 500 which we broke but are now trading over 710 today on the Citigroup ( C ) news. Although, Cramer notes that the uptick rule would make him bullish.
"The Chinese stimulus plan changes spending habits as they are basically giving you money to spend. Check out FXI stock. if you like China. "
Fertilizer Stock Plays - " I like TNH because of dividend play. "

Stock Market 3/8/09 Dow Jones Report
After a horrible week comes to an end, Wall Street must now look ahead for any signs of a stock market bottom or recovery. The Dow Jones started last week at 7062.93 and ended yesterday on a positive note at 6626.94. When it looked like the bottom was going to fall out on the stock market yesterday, we had a nice short squeeze going into the close. This was the first time in 7 trading sessions where we went up into the close versus selling off. Stock market futures were even up in after hours trading as well. Below are some things that I will be watching for next week.
Stock Market Watch List 3/9/09 - 3/14/09
General Motors ( GM ) - Do you hear the clock ticking? General Motors is currently in meetings with bond holders in an effort to reduce their debt by 2/3's before the March 31, 2009 deadline. GM stock fell to a 75 year low yesterday as it closed at $1.45 per share. On Monday, officials from the Obama auto task force will sit down with GM executives in hopes to avoid bankruptcy. General Motors will give the task force members an up close view of the Chevy Volt Hybrid. Besides the stock market crashing in 2009, this could be the number one story soon as Washington comes to a decision. A GM bankruptcy could have huge systemic risk and send the stock market spiralling down once again.
Stem Cell Funding - President Barack Obama is getting set to overturn the ban on Stem Cell research funding by George W Bush. At least $200 million dedicated to stem cell research is part of a fast-tracked federal stimulus grant fund that could deliver money to labs as early as summer's end, said Dr. Arnold Kriegstein, director of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UC San Francisco.
Stem Cell Stocks such as Stem Cells ( STEM ), Geron ( GERN ) Aastrom ( ASTM ), and Pluristem Therapeutics ( PSTI ) could be very active on Monday when this news hits.
DryShips ( DRYS ) - DRYS was very strong at the end of last week. After a capitulation move under $3, DRYS ripped back over the 10 day moving average. A break over $4 could start a nice run back to the upside. Keep in mind, DRYS is due to report earnings any day now. This event could make or break DRYS stock price.
Freeport McMoran ( FCX ) - Did anyone notice how strong this stock was yesterday? FCX was up most of the day as the stock market went down. Copper prices have been rising after a nice stabilization period. After hitting a low of 26.32 on Monday, FCX hit a high of $34.39 on Friday!

Stock Market 2/28/09 Dow Jones Report
February 2009 has come and gone for the stock market. It was the worst February since 1933 as far as percentage losses. The Dow Jones fell from 8000.86 to 7062.93, down 11.72%
Here are some things I am watching for March of 2009:
Here are some things I am watching for March of 2009:
- Another auto bailout? General Motors GM and Chrysler have already received 17.4 billion in Federal Loans and are asking for an additional 21.6 Billion. President Barack Obama's auto task force is trying to restructure GM and Chrysler by March 31. If GM and Chrysler fail to make a convincing case, the administration could pull the loans and essentially force the companies into bankruptcy protection.
- Jobs Report - Unemployment Rate - 3/6/09: Friday, March 6, 2009, the Government will release employment data. We could be looking at a record 700,000+ job losses in the month of February.
- Where will the bottom be for the stock market? Who knows! The fact that we closed under 741 on the S&P 500 and below 7100 on the Dow Jones has me thinking things could get worse soon. The market wants to rally as we are very oversold but the steady flow of bad news keeps flooding the stock market. The crazy thing is the VIX has remained in the 40's through this whole down draft. You just don't see the panic like we had in late 2008. With the huge down move that we've seen since the beginning of 2008, I can't imagine the bottom will form easily. I'm still looking for that gigantic whoosh day where everyone throws in the towel. Also known as capitulation! When we get this, you could see a 30-40% move off the bottom.

What is Hogan's Bottom? Art Hogan Bottom CNBC
What is Hogan's Bottom? "The Hogan Bottom" is a phrase heard on CNBC which was called on October 10th, 2008, by Art Hogan - managing director at Jefferies. Art Hogan boldly came on CNBC just after 9am when the Dow Jones Futures were down 400 and the Dow Jones was set to break 8000 for the first time since late 2003. Art Hogan said the bottom gets put in today, enough is enough!
Now, I'm assuming he was referring to the Dow Jones since most people think of the Dow Jones Industrial Average when the general term of " Stock Market " is used. Erin Burnett even referred to a few Dow components in the interview such as General Electric ( GE ) and IBM ( IBM ).
So, Art Hogan's bottom call turned out to be, for the most part, right! The Dow Jones crashed and hit 7773.71 and then bounced. Art Hogan also came on November 14, 2008, and said we will bounce and we will have to reset and figure out where we are when we get to 2009.
Below are the lows hit in 2008 for the Dow, Nasdaq, S&P 500 -
Dow Jones - Hogan Bottom Failed only 1 day - 11/20/08
October 10, 2008 - 7773.71 low on Hogan Bottom Day
November 20, 2008 - 7464.51 low
November 21, 2008 - 7449.38 low but we closed at 8046
Nasdaq
October 10, 2008 - 1542.45 low
November 21, 2008 - 1295.48 low
S&P 500
October 10, 2008 - 839.80 low
November 21, 2008 - 741.02 low

Stock Market Report 12/8/08 Dow Jones
Have the Stock Market's Bottomed? That is the question circulating Wall Street today as the Dow Jones rips through 8831 Resistance and approaches a test of 9000. The Dow Jones is currently seeing some nice buying volume this morning due to Barack Obama's potential stimulus plans and also a possible big three auto bailout lurking around the corner. How we will end the day today, this is the million dollar question. We all know that these markets are a bit schizo and what goes up in the morning could go the other way in the last hour of trading. Technically, we are looking really good today. I don't think there is anything to worry about unless we break back through 8831 on the Dow Jones. I will have more analysis later tonight after we close today.
Stock to Watch December 8, 2008 - I am watching Hartford Financial ( HIG ) today. I shorted it earlier, took my gains, but it is starting to look a bit weak after going from $9 on Friday to hitting $18 this morning. I think a lot of shorts got caught with this stock and I feel it is overdone to the upside. A break below $16 would be very bearish.
Also watching QID - will add more to protect my Google ( GOOG ) position if these market do sell off this afternoon.

Also watching QID - will add more to protect my Google ( GOOG ) position if these market do sell off this afternoon.

Art Cashin Comments CNBC 12/04/08 - Bottom?
Art Cashin, UBS Floor Trader on the NYSE, was on CNBC 12/4/08 and gave his comments on the stock market today.
Art Cashin CNBC Comments 12/4/08
With the News today, is there any way we can shake it off?
A lot of this negative economic stuff is kinda of catch up news priced in, its a good sign to get negative news and close up on the stock markets. We are still in a trading range, but its comforting to be closing up on bad news. This is a sign the market is bottoming!
Do you have a jobs number that's priced into the market for tomorrow? 300-350,000 is priced in, i'm hearing a number as high as 400,000 jobs lost tomorrow. Revisions will be something to watch as October's job loss could get revised higher.
We think the big three automakers will get some sort of bailout.

Bill Gross Comments CNBC 12/03/08 - Bottom
Bill Gross of Pimco was on CNBC today, 12/03/08, and gave these comments of the stock market. Bill Gross actually hinted that the stock market may be bottoming here.
Why are you buying stocks and think they are attractive here?
Risk taking over the long run will be rewarded, I think there is a good chance the stock market stabilizes here as well as the increase of asset prices.
Bill Gross on Bonds
We haven't bought Government bonds yet, Corporate bonds such as Caterpillar ( CAT ) & Hewlett-Packard ( HPQ ), A rated companies, yield 6-8% and are increasingly attractive. We haven't bought these yet even though they are attractive.
Would you Refinance into a 30 year fixed rate?
Not yet, shoot for 4.5 - 5% as a target, so don't refinance yet.

Art Cashin CNBC 11/26/08 - Market Bottom
Art Cashin was on CNBC 11/26/08, and gave comments about where we are in the stock market after this nice three day gain. You can see all of Art's past comments HERE.
What do we have to be Thankful for Art? Well, we Survived the year so far....feels very much like we're getting close to a bottom here.
Concern is growing that Bernanke thinks we are still at the edge of the cliff, and this is holding the markets back right now.
The market runs ahead of a bad economy, the stock market will rally well before we get out of this mess. We have a major move coming and I'm hoping its to the upside but we might get one more final washout. This is starting to look like the 1982 bottom.

Art Cashin CNBC 11/25/08 - Market Bottom?
Art Cashin came on CNBC 11/25/08 and gave some comments on the current stock market conditions and his opinion on a possible stock market bottom.
Art Cashin Comments: November 25, 2008
The further away from the bottom you get, the more credible it becomes....we are watching volume to see if this can hold. We are watching levels on the S&P 500 of 865 and 872 as resistance levels.
People were waiting yesterday for sellers to come in the last half hour, they didn't arrive, so that made buyers scramble to buy.
We still have to give this rally a little more time to figure it out, is this just another bear market rally? Some say we have another leg down to go. For more comments from Art Cashin, go HERE

Art Cashin CNBC 11/21/08 - Citigroup C
Art Cashin was on CNBC this morning, 11/21/08, talking about the markets and Citigroup C.
I think the rumor mongers are still into this game, we just need things to calm down and it will be fine with Citigroup (C).
Options expiration today: We have to see what they do in the final hour... maybe we tip toe into the weekend, regroup Monday, and maybe see if we are in the bottoming phase next week.

Dow Jones Analysis 11/18/08 - Stock Market

Another weak day for the Dow Jones and the overall Stock Market today. Here is Dow Jones technical analysis for 11/18/08 ( November 18th, 2008 )
This is how I am trading stocks based on the Dow Jones Industrial Average ( DJIA) for tomorrow, 11/18/08. The level 8175 is key to me, so is 8000, so is 7965, and most importantly 7774.
Dow Jones Support and Resistance Levels for 11/18/08
The Dow Jones closed right near Thursday's close around 8275....100 points above the Oct 27th closing of 8175. It looks like we may retest the lows again and I don't think they will hold this time. I could be wrong, but will the buyers show up again at the lows for the 4th time? Ok, so if we break 8175 i'm out of everything and will watch....if we get some buying, I will quickly get back in. If the selling persists, I will get back out. If we take out 7965 that will be really bearish and I will look for 7800 to hold....if that doesn't hold, you could be looking at the Dow Jones testing 7000. One more final plunge this could really rattle things. Will Carter Worth be right about these lows holding? Will the Hogan bottom hold? These questions should be answered somewhat this week or next! Dow Jones Close 11/13/08 - Stock Market Closing Prices
Stock Market Closing Prices - 11/13/08
Dow Jones Industrial Average ( DJIA ) Close - 8835.25 Up 553
Nasdaq Stock Market Close - 1596.70 Up 97.49
S&P 500 Close - 911.32 Up 59.02
Libor Rates - 11/13/08
1 Month - 1.42%
3 Month - 2.15%
Commodities Closing Prices - 11/13/08
Gold - 731
Oil - 59.50
Natural Gas - 6.43
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 8835 on 11/13/08, as the stock market hit the lows in the morning followed by a huge reversal in the afternoon. The Stock Market Futures were flat to up this morning, the Dow Jones was up around 120 before giving back all of its gains and then starting a downward spiral. The Nasdaq and SP 500 made fresh 52 week lows and the Dow Jones crashed under 8000. This is when big institutional buyers started stepping in and buying the QQQQ, SPY, and big cap technology stocks such as Apple ( AAPL ) and Google ( GOOG ).
The Dow Jones was down 300 points but suddenly started reversing and went positive at around 1:45 pm est. Heavy buy volume took the Dow Jones through resistance of 8400....we went back to retest 8300 but then started another leg up going into the last hour of trading. Carter Worth gave some bullish comments this afternoon and the market ripped even higher. Tomorrow is the G20 summit and there are rumors something will come out of that meeting.
To sum up the day, we had very light volume take the Dow Jones down 300 points under 8000, then big buyers stepped in and took us up 850 points off the lows. It is very early, but this finally looks like a bottom to me as did October 10th when the Dow Jones hit 7775 and reversed off of those lows. Everytime we hit 8000 or lower, big buyers step in!
The QQQQ is breaking and closing over $30.25 again which I have been talking about over the past few weeks. $30.70 is your next resistance level.
Today we finally got what Art Cashin refers to as a Cattle Stampede!
