Today's Stock Gainers 1/9/09 - Jobs Report

This morning, 1/09/09, the futures are slightly lower as we wait for the jobs report to hit. I will post the employment report number when it hits here in 15 minutes as well as the unemployment rate. Also check out technical analysis of the stock market for today.

Today's Biggest Gainers - January 9, 2009

Palm ( PALM ) - New Smart phone debuted at consumer electronic show
Apollo Group ( APOL ) - Strong Earnings Report
YRC Worldwide ( YRCW ) - Analyst Raises Estimates

Employment Number - -524,000
Unemployment Rate - 7.2%

There were revisions to the last payroll report, another 150K lost in November...so I don't really believe this -524K number. We lost 2.6 million jobs in 2008 - 1.9 million lost in the last 4 months.

Stock Market Futures are going up

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 8944 on 11/07/08, as investors shook off the grim jobs report and sent stocks higher. The Stock Market Futures were flat this morning, The Dow Jones futures were actually down 20 at one point but quickly rose at the open. The Dow was up 250 during the Obama News Conference but gave back half of those gains after he spoke. I felt he gave a great news conference! Libor Rates fell once again today and investors also shook off the General Motors ( GM ) news. I will have some Technical Analysis on the Dow Jones this weekend so make sure you check back on my home page. Something else to note, there was 4 million shares for sale of Wells Fargo ( WFC ) stock going into the close, there was a big crowd around the Wells Fargo post on the trading floor of the NYSE. Not sure of any news as of yet.

Biggest Gainers - November 7th, 2008

One of the hottest stocks today was Fuel Systems Solutions ( FSYS ). This company reported blowout earnings and is on the Top 2008 Stocks list. Fluor ( FLR ) was also up huge!

Dow Jones Close 11/06/08 - Stock Market Closing Prices, General Motors ( GM )

Stock Market Closing Prices - 11/06/08

Dow Jones Industrial Average ( DJIA ) Close - 8695.75 Down 443
Nasdaq Stock Market Close - 1609 Down 73
S&P 500 Close - 905 Down 48

Libor Rates - 11/06/08

1 Month - 1.77%
3 Month - 2.39%

Commodities Closing Prices - 11/06/08

Gold - 734
Oil - 61.12
Natural Gas - 6.92

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 8696 on 11/06/08, as the stock market fell big for the second straight day after a new President was voted into the United States office. Investors are worried about General Motors ( GM ) which is a huge Dow Jones component. General Motors continues to burn through cash each day that goes by and might end up getting some kind of bailout from the Government. GM has been hovering around the $5 level all day, down more then 10%. The Stock Market Futures were down this morning, The Dow Jones futures were actually down 150 points at one point, we went positive right after the open, and then it was all downhill from there. The retail sales number was horrible and investors are positioning their portfolios from the highly anticipated employment report tomorrow. This report will set the tone for the next few weeks. Anything less then a 210,000 job loss number, I think you could get a small relief rally. Anything under 200,000 lost, you could get a big relief rally. Anything more then 250,000 lost, look out below. The market has priced in most of this bad report in the past two days. That's just my opinion!

As for the Nasdaq, do you remember when I was talking about breaking $30.25 on the QQQQ? The figure was resistance, and now acts as support. We came within .12 cents of that figure today. If we close below $30.25 on the QQQQ, we could retest the lows once again.

Biggest Gainers - Stocks to Watch - November 6th, 2008

Las Vegas Sands ( LVS ), Hartford Financial ( HIG ) - I continue to watch these for a trade, I will not hold them overnight but if I see them breaking through the high of the day, I will trade them for a quick gain.

MasterCard ( MA ) - Jim Cramer still likes this stock, and he has defended himself today on CNBC saying that it jumped $10 right after he mentioned it which he doesn't like to see. He says the shorts piled in and shorted it. If this is a $180 stock, why did it go under $140 today, it should have at least stayed above $150 where it was after earnings. Anyway, if we get a rally in the stock market, MasterCard should run up with it.

Jobs Report 11/07/08 - Unemployment Rate for October

When are the next Jobs number and Unemployment rate data going to be released? The answer is Friday, November 7th, 2008. Mark this date on your calendars because this Jobs report and Unemployment rate number are going to be ugly. The question is, when will the markets start pricing in this data or is it already priced in? In September we saw the United States lose 159,000 jobs with the unemployment rate spiking to 6.1%. Stocks plunged on this news and we started a steep decline.

Some analysts estimate that the employment number is going to be -200,000+ jobs lost and the unemployment rate could hit 6.5% or higher. If the data we get on 11/07/08 is really bad, you could see massive panic and another downturn. Donald Trump thinks we are going into the second Depression.
