The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 8474 on 1/12/09, as the stock market went down on fears that Alcoa's ( AA ) earnings will disappoint tonight. AA is expected to report a loss of 4 cents per share. Also, a huge warning sign today was the trading action in Citigroup ( C ) stock. Citi shares broke two key support levels and began another rapid decline during the afternoon hours. Citigroup broke $6.51 in the morning, and then $5.94 during the afternoon. These were two key lows in December. Citigroup traded below $5.45 in the final hour of trading today down almost 20% on the day. The Dow Jones and Nasdaq followed the S&P 500 lower and now the Dow Jones is below 8500, a key support level. Tomorrow will be an interesting day for the stock market! I will have full technical analysis tonight, Right Here

Stock Market Report 1/12/09, January 12, 2009
Why is the stock market going down today? The Dow Jones, Nasdaq, and S&P 500 are all very weak during the first half of trading today. Here are a few reasons why the major averages continue their downward slide.
- Earnings Season is Here - Alcoa AA, a key Dow Jones component, releases earnings tonight and Wall Street is sending shares of this company down almost 8% ahead of this report. This alone is adding pressure to the Dow Jones Average.
- Oil Prices Continue to Fall - After hitting $50 last week, Oil is back under $38 today and this is sending commodities stocks lower. Look at Potash ( POT ) for example, down 10.3% today on no news.
- Citigroup ( C ) Breaking Down - Citigroup continues to break down breaking the $6.51 low from late December. Support is at $5.94 from early December and if this level is take out, look out below. If Citigroup starts free falling like it did back in November, the market could get spooked once again. Keep an eye on Citi!
- Low Volume - There is just no volume in the market today, a few big sells can really hit the markets hard when you have a lack of volume and buyers.
- Dow Jones Testing 8500 - It was bound to happen sooner or later, the Dow Jones is back testing 8500, today and tomorrow could be big technical days.

Dow Jones Analysis 1/12/09 - Stock Market

The following is Technical Analysis for the Dow Jones ( DJIA ) for 1/12/09
Dow Jones Support & Resistance Levels - January 12, 2009
Resistance Levels: 8750, 9000, 9088, 9150
Support Levels: , 8500, 8345
http://stockcharts.com - Chart
The Dow Jones has closed below two key moving averages on Friday ( 10 & 50 day ).This is something worth watching as this is a technically bearish signal but as long as the Dow Jones holds 8500 everything will be ok.
On the upside, a close back over these two moving averages will probably take us back for a retest of 9000. We are getting closer to a breakout point as we can't stay in this 8500-9000 range forever. We will either start a new leg down or break out big to the upside. For More Technical Analysis, Go Here

Nasdaq Analysis 1/12/09 - January 12, 2009
The following is Technical Analysis for the Nasdaq ( NAS ) for 1/12/09Nasdaq Support & Resistance Levels - January 12, 2009
Resistance Levels: 1600, 1625, 1665
Support Levels: 1600, 1580, 1554
http://stockcharts.com - Chart
Today's Biggest Gainers - Top 2009 Stock Gainers
The Nasdaq closed well below the support level of 1600 and also closed below the 10 day moving average on Friday. The next support level I am watching is 1553 which is the 50 day moving average. If this level is closed below, a retest of 1500 could be in store. As I've said since December, I am bullish on the Nasdaq as long as we stay above 1500...a break below would be a bearish sign. Resistance is back at 1600 once again and the 1665.53 high from last week. The Nasdaq is still in a nice uptrend from the November lows. For More Technical Analysis, Go Here
