The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 8744 on 7/17/09, as the stock market traded flat after several bank related earnings. The Dow Jones Futures were lower in pre market but stocks were mostly flat all day long. We will find out Monday or Tuesday whether or not CIT Group ( CIT ) gets funding from the private sector. The Government has indicated that they will not bail out the company. A bankruptcy would be really bad for up to a million small business which include key retailers who need to purchase their Christmas and back to school items.

The hottest sector today was Energy. Stocks such as Headwaters Inc. (HW) - Eagle Rock Energy Partners, L.P. (EROC) - Superior Well Services Inc. (SWSI) - Aegean Marine Petroleum Network Inc. (ANW) and Venoco, Inc. (VQ) saw nice gains!

Next week will be light on economic data but one of the busiest weeks for earnings. Among the companies releasing earnings will be Apple Inc ( AAPL ). Check out some of the events I will be watching for Monday.
