The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 8776 on 12/31/08, as the stock market closed out the year on a positive note but traded on very low volume. The Stock Market will be open a full day on 1/2/09 and I expect to see low volume once again. Next week the real action will come back and could set the tone for January. Oil exploded to the upside today on short covering hitting $45 a barrel at one point. One of the biggest gainers today that wasn't a micro cap was Dryships ( DRYS ). Drys exploded this morning and then traded in a tight range between $11-$11.30 this afternoon. At the end of the day Drys broke through $11 support. This will be a stock to watch next week.

Dryships DRYS Analysis - 12/31/08 - December 31, 2008
Today, 12/31/08, Dryships DRYS stock is breaking out with heavy volume this morning. If you are long this stock, the key levels to look at are $12.10 and $13.76. These are the two highs on the last run up.
As for this afternoon, DRYS is hitting strong resistance in the $11's where there is heavy selling around the $11.37 area. If Drys can break $11.37 it sets up a potential afternoon run. A break back below $11 at any point today would be viewed as bearish but a sell off could set up for a gap up in price on Friday 1/02/09.
The key point with Drys is it has traded back above the 10 and 50 day moving averages which if this holds up would be a bullish buy signal. for now, i'm watching $11 and $11.37
The Baltic Dry Index is closed for the holidays and I believe it reopens 1/2/09. I will have the latest data posted here on my blog.

The Dow Jones closed over both the 10 and 50 day moving averages...a very bullish indicator. Although it has been on low volume, this is very positive action. This makes both 8500 and 8350 very solid support levels. The next key resistance level is 8800 and then 9000.
Lets wait and see what happens next week as we get the volume back as well as the employment report on Friday.

Stock Alert 12/30/08 - NFP National Financial Partners
This afternoon, December 30th, 2008, I am noticing National Financial Partners ( NFP ) stock breaking out to the upside. This stock has been inching up all day and finally the volume is hitting around 1:25pm. NFP stock went from 2.50 to 2.90 in about 5 minutes.
National Financial Partners ( NFP ) is back where it started the day yesterday so I guess you can make the case it is NOT breaking out. This is a beaten down financial stock which has resistance around the $3 level so I will continue to monitor this one.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 8484 on 12/29/08, as the stock market fell on very low volume today but managed to rise going into the close. The Dow Jones started out the day to the upside but shortly fell into negative territory after the open. Oil and Natural Gas rose due to the violence around the Gaza Strip. One of the laggards on the Nasdaq was Research in Motion ( RIMM ) as this stock fell below $40 on fears that Wal Mart selling the iPhone would hurt sales of the Blackberry. This is something worth watching as there has been some talk that Microsoft ( MSFT ) might try to buy RIMM at some point in 2009. That is pretty much all that happened today as this will be another boring week. Next week the volume comes back along with a Jobs report due out 1/9/08
Today's Biggest Stock Market Gainers - KKR Financial ( KFN ) was a huge gainer for the second straight day and General Moly ( GMO ) was a late day riser.

The Dow Jones closed back over key support of 8500 on Friday so I am currently bullish. As I have been saying lately, 8500 is the key area right now that you want to be watching.
I am very cautious however as the Dow appears to be starting to break down again. The Dow formed a double top at 9000 and has since broke back below the 10 day and 50 day moving averages.
Key support levels after 8500 would be 8300 and 8150

The Nasdaq continues to trade above the key support level of 1500 which is bullish. However, proceed with caution as the Nasdaq is once again trending below both the 10 day and 50 day moving averages.
This coming week will be a light volume one so i'm waiting for the volume to come back to see which direction we are going next.
The Nasdaq has resistance at 1545 and 1560 while support is 1500 and 1450.

http://stockcharts.com/ - Chart
The Dow Jones closed below key support level of 8500 today for the first time in over two weeks....this is something worth watching. The volume has been very light but it is still a bearish signal. The next support level is 8300 and 8500 now becomes resistance. I am now being cautious until we close back over 8500.

Dow Jones Analysis 12/23/08 - Stock Market
The following is Technical Analysis for the Dow Jones ( DJIA ) for 12/23/08
Dow Jones Support & Resistance Levels - December 23, 2008
Resistance Levels: 8675, 8700
Support Levels: 8500, 8150
http://stockcharts.com - Chart
The Dow Jones closed over 8500 after trading most of the afternoon below this level. As you know, 8500 has been a big battle ground over the past few months and offers a nice support level. 9000 could not be closed above and the Dow Jones is now selling well below both the 10 and 50 day moving averages. The Next support level to watch if 8500 is closed below is 8300 and the key support level of 8150 which has held countless times. As long as the Dow closes above 8500, I remain bullish.

Nasdaq Analysis 12/23/08 - December 23, 2008
The following is Technical Analysis for the Nasdaq ( NAS ) for 12/23/08
Nasdaq Support & Resistance Levels - December 23, 2008
Resistance Levels: 1545, 1575
Support Levels: 1500, 1450
http://stockcharts.com - Chart
http://stockcharts.com - Chart
The Nasdaq was very weak today and tested the key support of 1500 but there was buying near the close. This is a level worth watching. If 1500 is closed below, the next support level would be 1450. Today was the first time the Nasdaq broke well below the 10 day moving average since the election high of 1785 was made. Resistance is now at the 10 day moving average which is located around 1548. I am still bullish on the Nasdaq as long as we stay above 1500. A close above 1600 would cure all of this!

Biggest Gainers 12/22/08 NVD, QI Stocks
Today, 12/22/08, there are several big stock gainers so far in pre market trading. It seems like penny stocks are the biggest gainers now as we go into 2009. These stocks can go up big but also go down just as big, so use caution if you are trading these stocks. I usually don't touch these stocks but I did trade DVAX last week.

Dow Jones Analysis 12/22/08 - Stock Market
The following is Technical Analysis for the Dow Jones ( DJIA ) for 12/21/08, 12/22/08
Dow Jones Support & Resistance Levels - December 22, 2008
Resistance Levels: 8700, 8935, 9000
Support Levels: 8500, 8300, 8150, 8000
Support Levels: 8500, 8300, 8150, 8000
http://stockcharts.com - Chart
The Dow Jones is starting to look weak and has formed a double top at 9000. At this point, a close above 9000 would be huge and could take the Dow up to test the election high of 9653.
Although the Dow Jones has closed below both 10 & 50 day moving averages for the second straight day, I am still bullish on the Dow as long as it closes over 8500 which has been a key support level. A close below 8500 would start a break down and would flash a sell signal in my book. 8300 would be your next level of support as well as 8150. The 8150 level has been virtually bullet proof over the past month so this is where i'd look to buy.

Support Levels: 1557, 1535, 1500
http://stockcharts.com - Chart
The Nasdaq continues to hit resistance just below 1600 and sells off back to the 10 day moving average...this has been the trend over the past two weeks. A close over 1600 would be a breakout and the Nasdaq could then test the next resistance of 1675-1700.
Support: The Nasdaq has support at around 1557 and 1535, after that you have key support of 1500. As long as the Nasdaq stays over 1500, I am bullish.

Dow Jones Analysis 12/19/08 - Stock Market
The following is Technical Analysis for the Dow Jones ( DJIA ) for 12/19/08
Dow Jones Support & Resistance Levels - December 19, 2008
Resistance Levels: 8700, 8935, 9000
Dow Jones Support & Resistance Levels - December 19, 2008
Resistance Levels: 8700, 8935, 9000
The Dow Jones is starting to look toppy here as it failed to break through 9000 again today. As you know, I love the Dow over 8500 and this has been a major support level on a closing basis for the last two weeks. If the Dow Jones closes below 8500 I will be concerned.
Resistance is now at the lower 8700 area where both the 10 day and 50 day moving averages are located. I have a feeling given today's sell off, traders will be selling at the 8700 level. Closing above 8725 would bring you resistance at 8935-9000 again.
Support - 8500 and 8300 must both hold or the Dow will start to roll back over and retest the solid 8150 support level.

Nasdaq Analysis 12/19/08 December 19, 2008
The following is Technical Analysis for the Nasdaq ( NAS ) for 12/19/08
Nasdaq Support & Resistance Levels - December 19, 2008
Resistance Levels: 1580, 1600
Support Levels: 1535, 1500
http://stockcharts.com - Chart
The Nasdaq failed again today at 1600..hitting a high of 1592 and then selling off late in the day back to the 10 day moving average. 1600 is starting to be a problematic area but as long as we remain above 1500 I am bullish. The Nasdaq has yet to close above the 50 day moving average like the Dow Jones has, and if this would happen it would bring technical buying into the Nasdaq Market. This could put us over the 1600 level. Volatility is dying down going into the end of the year.

Dow Jones Close 12/18/08 - Stock Market Closing Prices
Stock Market Closing Prices - 12/18/08
Dow Jones Industrial Average ( DJIA ) Close - 8604.99 Down 219.91
Nasdaq Stock Market Close - 1552.37 Down 26.94
S&P 500 Close - 885.31 Down 19.11

3 Month - 1.525%
Commodities Closing Prices - 12/18/08
Gold - 853
Oil - 36.81
Natural Gas - 5.55
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 8604 on 12/18/08, as Exxon Mobile ( XOM ), a key Dow component, took a nose dive due to Oil hitting $36 a barrel. Adding to the weakness, Standard and Poors downgraded GE credit to negative but still left them with a triple A rating. The Stock Market immediately traded down after this credit rating news. In the final hour, there was massive dumping of stocks, sellers were hitting the bids on most stocks hard. We now have the Dow Jones below the both moving averages but as long as the Dow holds 8500 on a closing basis, I am still bullish. For the Nasdaq, I love it above 1500. At the end of the day, Alan Greenspan came out with comments on the banking system. In March of 2007, he came out and warned of a recession in 2008 and people trashed him. I will have technical analysis of the markets tonight, Right Here
Todays Biggest Stock Market Gainers DVAX still has some life in it. In the final hour, it ran from $1.25 to $1.70. Nice move in a down market!

Alan Greenspan comments 12/18/08 December 18
Alan Greenspan has come out with some comments today, 12/18/08, on the housing market, banking system, and the stock market
Greenspan says the Banking System needs an additional 250 billion in capital. The Tarp program is working so far but it is not enough.
Alan Greenspan thinks the stock market can recover 6-12 months from today, December 18, 2008.
Greenspan also thinks the housing market can bottom or start to recover by mid 2009.

General Motors GM & Ford F 12/18/08 Stock Report
General Motors ( GM ) and Ford ( F ) stocks just took a nose dive at 11:55am this morning, 12/18/08. General Motors just hit a low of $3.52 and Ford hit a low of $2.81. I'm sure this has something to do with the bailout plan but I can't find any news. This is something to watch. The Dow Jones and Stock Market's do not seem to be effected by these drops.

Citigroup C Analysis 12/18/08 December 18, 2008
The following is technical analysis of Citigroup ( C ) for 12/18/08. You can see the chart of Citigroup C HERE.
Citigroup ( C ) Analysis: December 18th, 2008
Citigroup ( C ) is starting to have trouble breaking up through the mid $8's after topping out at $9 last week. Citi has support at $7 and this is where i'd put a stop order, any close below this and I think it could retest $6. The next few weeks will be critical for this stock.
Resistance $8.50, Support $7

Dry Bulk Shipping Rates Report - 12/18/08 DRYS
The following is a report on Dry Bulk Shipping Rates for 12/18/08. This data is critical for how the DryBulk Shipping Stocks such as DryShips ( DRYS ), Excel Maritime Carriers ( EXM ), Diana Shipping ( DSX ), Genco Shipping ( GNX ), TBS International ( TBSI ), Navios Maritime ( NM ), and OceanFreight ( OCNF ) will trade during the day. As you probably know, the Dry Bulk Shipping index can tell you a lot about the state of the World Economy. When Bulk Shipping Rates are at all time highs, the World Economy is outstanding. When Bulk Shipping Rates are as low as they have been lately, it signifies that the world economy has come to a screeching halt.

Dow Jones Open 12/18/08 - Stock Market
The Dow Jones and Stock Market's are opening up slightly higher 12/18/08 on low volume. Oil is breaking down below $38 per barrel. Apple ( AAPL ) computer is rebounding a bit. Look for a rally if $91.10 is broken. Research in Motion closed above $40 yesterday but has fallen below $39 this morning as we await earnings. I was stopped out at $40 this morning so I am officially back out of this position but still own my Apple. Bought some USO today as I am starting a small long position. I have been waiting for break below $34 on the USO for awhile.

Stem Cells STEM FDA Approval 12/18/08
Expect Stem Cells ( STEM ) to be a big gainer today, 12/18/08, as this company received FDA Approval to initiate a clinical trial of the Company’s proprietary HuCNS-SC product candidate (purified human neural stem cells) to treat Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease (PMD), a fatal brain disorder that mainly affects young children. This Phase I trial is designed to evaluate the safety and preliminary efficacy of HuCNS-SC cells as a treatment for PMD. Currently, there are no approved treatments for this disease.
This is the Company’s second FDA-approved clinical trial to evaluate HuCNS-SC cells as a potential treatment for neurodegenerative diseases. The first such study was the Company’s Phase I clinical trial of HuCNS-SC cells to treat neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL), or Batten disease. The Phase I NCL trial will be completed in January 2009.
Patients with PMD are born with a gene mutation that results in insufficient myelination of nerve fibers in the brain, neurological impairment and eventually death. Myelin, which is produced by special cells called oligodendrocytes, insulates nerve fibers to allow electrical signals to be conducted normally. Other, more common, myelination diseases include cerebral palsy, transverse myelitis and multiple sclerosis
STEM is up 16% to $1.54 in pre market trading.

Dow Jones Analysis 12/18/08 - Stock Market
The following is Technical Analysis for the Dow Jones ( DJIA ) for 12/18/08
Dow Jones Support & Resistance Levels - December 18, 2008
Resistance Levels: 9000, 9200, 9654
Support Levels: 8750, 8500
http://stockcharts.com - Chart
The Dow Jones failed to break strong resistance at 9000 today but is still trending 100 points above the 50 day moving average which is bullish. The 10 day is getting ready to cross the 50, another bullish indicator. Breaking and closing over Dow 9000 will not be an easy task, but like 1600 on the Nasdaq, if the Dow Jones can do this, there could be a significant move to the upside. Resistance for the Dow after 9000 would be the 9200 level and 9654 level. Support continues to be both the 10 and 50 day moving averages as well as 8500. More Technical Analysis - Go HERE

Support Levels: 1580, 1540, 1500
http://stockcharts.com - Chart
The Nasdaq continues to trade in this uptrend in a bear market with pullbacks being bought near the 50 day moving average. The Nasdaq has been testing the key resistance level of 1600 but has been failing. This level will be very tough to get through but if closed over, you could have a significant move to the upside. Support for the Nasdaq remains the 50 day and 10 day moving averages which by tomorrow will be 1580 and 1540. The Nasdaq remained fairly strong today despite negative news out of Apple, great sign! 10 Year Treasury Note 12/17/08 - December 17, 2008
The 10-year Treasury note yield has become the security most frequently quoted when discussing the performance of the U.S. government-bond market and is used to convey the market's take on longer-term macroeconomic expectations. Treasury notes are a stated interest rate, and the owner receives semi-annual interest payments.
Today, 12/17/08, the 10 Year Note fell to a new low hitting 2.074 but has rebounded up to 2.162 in the afternoon. This is an all time low, or the lowest since the Federal Reserve started keeping historic data. The fall in the 10 year note signifies that the Credit Crisis that started around sixteen months ago is far from over.
This is a situation worth watching!

Dry Bulk Shipping Rates Report - 12/17/08 DRYS
The following is a report on Dry Bulk Shipping Rates for 12/17/08.

Potash POT Analysis 12/17/08 - Technical Analysis
The following is technical analysis for Potash ( POT ). The chart you see is from weeks ago before Potash first closed back over the 10 day moving average causing this huge move up in share price to $80 today. I will have a new POT Chart tonight showing this analysis but due to stockcharts.com regulations, you can't take snaps during trading hours.
Potash Technical Analysis December 17, 2008
As you can see, Potash closed back over the 10 day moving average several weeks ago just like previous times and exploded to the upside. It was important not to be early because there were several times where it almost closed over the 10 day, but failed, only to take out the previous lows. The bounce off of $47.54 was a huge up volume move and buyers were chasing Pot into the close. This was the signal that some of the shorts were starting to cover. The next day, we got confirmation of a close over $57 which was the 10 day moving average. While this was a huge $10 move in two days....it was just the beginning of Pot's move which has happened two other times in the past several months.
Potash has made a major move so I would be cautious about buying above $75. Pot has closed back over the 50 day moving which is very bullish, so pullbacks to the 10 day moving average should be bought. POT has resistance from $81.54 - $85 and if these levels are cleared the next major resistance level is the Election High of $94.98. Pot has support at the $70 level where it stalled before making this last move higher as well as the 10 day moving average which is at $65.37. The 10 day moving average will be moving higher each trading session that goes by so keep that in mind. $47.54 will turn out to be a long term bottom for Potash and we all know, as evident in the past few weeks, the biggest moves come right after a stock bottoms.
